Winchester Bay/Reedsport OR

Thinking of staying at the Windy Cove A or B county park on Winchester Bay. We're not a fan of ATV noise, and the proximity to the dunes there worries me. I know they have a Dunefest in July or August, which we'll be sure to miss. Were planning to be there in May. Just wondering what others who have stayed there can tell us about the noise levels in the campground.

We are dune enthusiasts and always stay at Half Moon Bay. You WILL have UTV/ATV noise at Windy Cove A or B throughout the summer, not as bad as Half Moon Bay or Umpqua Dunes RV parks. UTV/ATV are allowed to ride from Windy Cove to the dunes along the road. What are you coming to the area for? A little further south is Tugman State Park which is nice.

Thanks for that information. Nothing wrong with ATVs... owned a couple dirt bikes/jet skis myself back in the day, but different time in our lives now and the noise upsets the cats too. We're starting at Reedsport and heading up the coast from there over a two week period. DW misses the ocean and I miss good seafood. Not much of either here in AZ.

You state that you're starting at Reedsport... why not drive up to Florence to make your first base?

We liked Winchester Bay but the dunes are the attraction and lots of atv traffic. Crabbing and fishing is also a big attraction there. Winchester Bay is a nice little village with crab shacks, great ice cream, and gift shops. They really cram the RVs in at the harbor, a little to close for us and just a busy place.

Sea Perch Rv Resort north of Florence is our favorite. Right on the beach, small park, 30 sites, a little pricey but worth it. Great beach that is basically accessed only by the resort guests. Up the road is Yachats with a great little place to eat, Luna Sea Food. Newport has the aquarium and the wharf area, plenty of good food and is close enough for a day trip. Not sure what will be open.

Any Oregon state park along the coast is a good spot but the reservation window is now only 30 days out with a 20% sir charge for out of state campers and some are currently closed.

Just a word of caution. Not sure what will be open up there. Oregon is like California and kind of locked down. Well more then kind of locked down. But if you want the sea and the beach.......

Northern CA has a couple great spots as well.

I highly recommend that if you don't like ATV noise not to stay at Windy Cove. A better option, but a little more pricey, is Winchester Bay RV Resort. They do not allow ATVs to ride in and out of the campground. It is a very nice place and you can crab right off of the pier at the entrance to the campground.

Thanks to all for the input. Looked closely at Winchester Bay RV Resort too but ended up making reservations at Oceanside RV Resort near Coos Bay (3rd night free for active military or vets!) and will move up toward Florence, Newport etc. after that. The plan is to go all the way up to Astoria and then take in the Columbia River Gorge on our way back home.

I think you made a good decision. We're ATV enthusiasts and enjoy riding the dunes. While most the duners are respectful and abide by the rules at Windy Cove, you're still going to hear the bikes come in and out of camp. It's definitely a campground geared towards riding. Winchester Bay RV Resort would have been a better option but when we were up there last year, duners would park their bikes/SxSs on the perimeter of the campground and you'd still get the noise.

Have fun and thank you for your service.

Scored an ocean front site for a couple nights at the Sea Perch RV Resort in Yachats too! Don't normally spend 80 bucks a night on RV spaces, but it's for a special occasion.

Thats a special place....you wont be disappointed. As I said, one of our favorites on the Oregon coast. We have 5 days in a ocean front site the first week in October and looking forward to it.
