Winter in Phoenix area
We're thinking about staying in the Phoenix area this winter and know absolutely nothing about the area. Seems like there are a lot of rv resorts and most of them are huge. Any recommendations as to where to stay and where to avoid?

We stay on East side in Mesa. If you have Passport America. Try one of the parks that offer PA discount. We stay in one of the Cal-Am parks and enjoy it. While many of them are large. They do have lots of activities. After you pick a park using PA. Spend some time looking around the area for other parks.

Many of the parks are, indeed, huge and they're full of Park Model permanent trailers. I'd recommend testing some of them out for a couple weeks each to get a feel on location and what you want in a park, especially if you plan to return next year. Also, perhaps a week at Lost Dutchman State Park or one of the awesome Maricopa County parks with huge sites and lush vegetation.
You also might want to spend part of your time down in the Tucson area. The Voyager RV Park is another huge park with every kind of activity you may want.
Some folks also like Lake Havasu area and Yuma. Benson is also nice for a more laid-back western feeling. It would be a little cooler in Benson though. Each area is completely different.
Move around the first year to test the waters. Being stuck for the whole season in a park you really don't like would be a bummer.
Here's a site for visitor reviews of the various parks:

Give us more info on what you like do and what kind of places you like to stay. There is much diversity in our state. Many options. Just a warning, you might not want to return.

Well we are going to try to go for the month of February. We mostly like sightseeing and exploring the area. Don't really need a lot of activities. Looking for something nice. Concrete pad and patio. Seems like everything I see is cheaper than Florida.

The possibilities are endless. The previous post suggests looking at park reviews, this would be a good start. Narrow it down to a few and then ask for specific recommendations. I would not be caught dead in a RV park (ing lot), Buy there are thousands like you who do.

all gravel lots in arizona
If you are looking for concrete pads and grass side yards look eleswhere than arizona
i have tried to find something like motorcoach resorts in arizona but have not found any
look to indio calif or lasvegas
i am currently in el mirage for four days and it is probably the nicest park in az but gravel, gravel etc.
will not plan on an extended stay here

We are staying one month at Gold Canyon RV resort in Gold Canyon then moving up to Cottonwood to Verde Valley RV for 1 month. This will let us do lots of exploring!

Phoenix area for RV's really means Mesa area. No recommendations as they are all large and pretty much the same: big, flat, close sites and lots of activities. Nothing wrong with that. We have friends who love the busyness, four lane roads, freeways, etc. There is a reason that area is by far the biggest area in AZ. If you want smaller stuff you will have to look outside the area.

Not only Mesa but look in Apache Junction on the eastern edge of Phoenix which is in a more scenic area and not as congested. It would be close to excellent hiking and even fishing along the Apache Trail - an awesome drive - don't miss it! It's still close enough to do things in Phoenix. All those towns runs together and it appears to be one BIG city.
I would not recommend Casa Grande. It won't give a first-timer a good feeling of Arizona. It's flat farming area and can get dust storms.

My daughter who lives in Chandler was concerned about crime in Apache Junction. I looked up crime statistics and they weren't great. I had not thought about looking up crime statistics before choosing a winter site. This site gives good information. neighborhoodscout.com
