Yellowstone 2018 trip

Hi all,
We are heading to Yellowstone in August and were looking for ideas and suggestions for places to use for a one week stay. We have a reservation in Red Rock about a half hour from the west entrance to the park. Any ideas appreciated.

Not sure of your question. Are you asking for things to do in Yellowstone itself. If so, each national park has a wonderful web site that lists things to do, road information, special alerts or problems, etc.

Don't forget to visit Grand Teton Nat'l Park right next door. It is completely different in looks and things to do than Yellowstone. You'll wish you had more time! Have a good trip!

Call to see if you can get a campsite in Yellowstone for at least a couple of nights. Even dry camping, if you're able to. Staying inside the Park adds so much to the Yellowstone experience, IMHO. Also cuts down on the amount of time you spend just getting to "the good stuff" every day.

Thank you...

Thanks a million, the experiences of others offer a lot of great advice. We realize we're starting to make plans late, but will try to see if we can find a place for us in the park as you suggest.

If I heard right, the full service campground ( Fishing Bridge )? inside Yellowstone is closed for updating this summer ?. Otherwise see if you can get a site at Madison or Bridge Bay. Both are dry camping, but puts ya in the middle of the action without all the travel time trying to re-enter the park. The west entrance can and will get clogged up with traffic. There is a herd of Bison (50-100) that hang out along that corridor, thus causing long traffic backups.

The only way to combat getting stuck in traffic is to get into the park by 8am to get a parking space at one of the geyser areas.

There is bound to be some cancellations at some of the interior YS campgrounds. Last May / June we did 8 nights in the Tetons (Gros Ventre Campground) and 7 + 7 inside Yellowstone (Bridge Bay & Madison). Worked out perfect.......Still being early season, we still tried to be on the road by 8am (ish) to get a parking spot at a geyser parking lot. We would then head back to the Old faithful parking lot for lunch (picnic) because that is the largest parking lot in the park. For vehicles....Don't try it with a RV....You will get boxed in. At the rear of the Old Faithful parking lot are a "few" picnic tables in the wooded area. Your other option for a sit down picnic is under the veranda of the Yellowstone Lodge. Nice cool area just outside the SW side of the building.

Fishing Bridge CG is OPEN...BUT big construction on that side and it may close very early Sept.

Watch the park website for info.

We've stayed at Grizzly RV Park in West Yellowstone and it is excellent. Plus it's only about 1 mile to the west gate.
The Grizzly and Wolf Discovery Center in West Yellowstone will give you a safe, up close look at animals you most likely will not see in the park itself.
