Yellowstone: mid April too early?

I realize that weather is pretty impossible to predict. Would mid to late April be too early for Yellowstone? I read to not expect Spring flowers until at least April. We would most likely be staying by the West entrance. Thanks!

Average temps according to the weather channel during the period highs in the 40's and lows in the 20"s so yes lots of propane.

We had snow on May 21 one year - Grizzley opens May 1 and the two KOA's do not open until May 22

In addition most stores will be closed

Thank you both for the information. Especially about Grizzly not opening until May.

South entrance rarely gets open until mid May and NE entrance even later.

As far as flowers, very little will be in bloom until May.

Here in Colorado, high-altitude wildflowers peak sometime between mid July to early August. Yellowstone is quite a bit north, but also lower so expect peak color to be just a bit earlier. We were there the last week in July in 2019. There were still a few excellent spots up high, but a couple of weeks earlier would have been better at lower altitudes.

Regards,

Randy

The North East Entrance at Silver Gate remains open year round to allow citizens of Cooke City access to the outside world. The road between Gardiner MT and Cooke City is kept open.

However, that is not a helpful fact! US212 east of Cooke City is closed during the winter. It typically opens the Friday before Memorial Day.

My sister and her partner worked at Bridge Bay Campground for several seasons after he retired, first for Xanterra in office and maintenance positions and then for the NPS as hosts. May of 2011 they were shoveling paths through many feet of snow to clear campsites for the Memorial Day opening. She told me they saw their picnic table in July.

Clearing the site meant you could back in or pull through, and a path was cleared to half the picnic table. The rest was snow.

In my opinion, April is too early. We were there in early June of 2019, and it was pretty cool even then. -Paul

We were there late May several years ago, town and workers just getting going. Lots of snow this year, I would call for a opening report.

Been to Yellowstone 10 times and IMOH April is too early....

Most everything will be closed so there won’t be much to do.... In addition, some roads will be closed also, so that will limit what you’ll be able to enjoy....

Wildlife viewing will be limited because many will still be dealing with the snow and cold....

Your nights will be VERY COLD and your daytime temps will most likely only be in 40’s at best....

The earliest we’ve ever gone was mid-May and even then we had some cold and snow....

To me the fun of Yellowstone is being able to get out and about all around the park.... Going to Lamar Valley to view wolves and bison, enjoying the mud pots, going to Old Faithful, etc... are what a visit there is all about...

Don’t short yourself of those opportunities by going a few weeks too early....

Sorry for the long post but that’s my two bits worth...

Enjoy your trip and safe travels.....
