Yellowstone Update- First hand

We are at Yellowstone RV Park at Mack's Inn. We are about 27 miles west of the West Entrance to Yellowstone NP. We went into West Yellowstone yesterday and bought a couple of T-shirts, no issues finding a parking space on the main street.

Today we left the RV Park at 8:15 am, heading for Yellowstone NP. We got into Montana on hwy 20, and stopped at MM7, 3 miles out of West Yellowstone. The traffic was backed up to that point for the entry into Yellowstone NP. After waiting for 30 minutes and moving 1/2 mile, we decide to turn around and skip Yellowstone for the day.

We rode down to Ashton and took in Mesa Falls Byway. This has 2 beautiful waterfalls, Lower Mesa Falls and Upper Mesa Falls. So, the day was not a total bust.

Thanks for an 'on the ground' report. I hope you get in. Consider getting to the gate super early in the morning. Tour & return to your RV for an afternoon nap. Go back in around 5pm when folks have called it a day. You'll see more wildlife that way and less traffic. Have a cooler packed and maybe pick up breakfast at a restaurant before heading in. Good luck!

We are here for 16 days total, so we will get in sometime. Plus, nothing else, another run to Grand Tetons and there are other things to see around here.

Thanks for the report. We were there in the beginning of May. Went in and out of the park's North entrance past Gardiner. We commented on the drive how nice it must be having a house by the river. Not so much anymore.

I saw those lines on the news tonight -yowzers!!!! For sure going in late in the afternoon might be the trick to seeing more.

Years ago we visited Mack's Playhouse in Island Park when we ran a caravan through that area. It was a dinner show. Mack's closed but now appears to have reopened as the Yellowstone Playhouse. It might be worth checking out.

Mesa Falls Scenic Byway was on my list a few years back but we didn't make it there. Maybe another choice.

Sawtelle Peak might be another interesting ride if you are into a bit of off-roading. A number of our caravaners went there and said it was nice. I suppose that is one more reason for us to get back there.

oh - Earthquake Lake (Hebgen Lake) is an interesting visit too.

Okay an update.....
Yesterday I had the milage wrong, from MM7 to West Yellowstone is only 3 miles, I missed a road sign at the state line, "West Yellowstone 10 miles".

We went back yesterday afternoon at 3:30 pm and rode straight to the park's gate. No traffic, no backup. Talked to a ranger there and he stated it took about 3 1/2 hours to get in yesterday morning after the park opened. He also said he turned about 30 cars around because they had the wrong plate, since it was an even number to enter.

So, from yesterday's experience, if you are planning on Yellowstone right now, try the later morning/early afternoon entry time. Crowds were not heavy. We seen several Bison, near the roads.

Fuel prices around here, the Sinclair right outside the park is $5.79/gas. Going toward West Yellowstone at Phillips 66, $6.09/diesel, $5.59/gas.
Five miles down the road toward Ashton, it is $6.39/diesel, $5.89/gas.
Down in Ashton $5.89/diesel, $5.49/gas. In the park at the Ole Faithful fuel pumps/lodge area $5.19/gas, $5.79/diesel.

So, fuel was cheaper in the park, then outside the park, even in West Yellowstone itself, by around $.40/gallon.

Thanks for the update, we’ll be there in about a week.

How is the plate checking handled, via registration at window or via camera in the booth? Just wondering if the towed vehicle or the towing vehicle is what they are checking, we need to cut through to get to Grand Teton first.

On the first day, even numbers, when we pulled up there was a ranger standing out in the road handing out the road closed maps. She looked at the plate, then when we pulled up to the booth, that ranger also checked the plate.

On day 2 of Yellowstone, our neighbors at the RV park said "they were vehicle #5 in line to get in. But we were there at 6:15 am waiting for them to open."

So today we are going to try to get in around 10:30 or 11:00 am, so we will see if we have a backup at this time.

There are a lot of live webcams at YNP, including one at the West Entrance. It doesn’t look to bad at the moment. Here’s a link to the various cams:

Day 2 entry:
We got into the park at around 10:30 am, no backup.

Gas price updates:
West Yellowstone you can find prices $5.14/gas, $5.59/diesel
At Ole Faithfull Fueling stop: $5.39/gas, $6.29/diesel
In 2 days, the prices have flopped around to where it is cheaper in West Yellowstone then in the park.

The crowd at Ole Faithful was back to being packed, compared to old photos from 2019. Standing room only, all of the benches were full. We were waiting and somebody started "The Wave" as in a baseball park.
We were at Ole Faithful at around 1:30pm.

If somebody asks if there is snow on the ground in Yellowstone on June 24th, the answer is YES!!. Up on the Continental Divide, at over 8200 ft., snow was still on the ground, allot of places, allot of snow.
