I've done it both ways, crewing for pilots privately as well as volunteering through the Fiesta folks. I think there's no better way to experience the Fiesta than to get up close and personal with the balloons. Pilots appreciate a dedicated and reliable crew, and as a reward you might get a balloon ride for your efforts. It's a hoot to be in the basket during a mass ascension. Crewing can be a bit of a work out though and you're up before the chickens so you can make it to the field before the crowds form, so it's a bit of a commitment. Something to think about though if you'll be in town for the duration.

Been volunteering for 3 years now. Chase crew in the morning - volunteering in the evening.
We plan on doing it for the next 3. Then stop
