We are going to the Brickyard 400 again this year. Least year we didn't take the kids and camped in the Coke lot. We were thinking of staying at the Indianapolis KOA this year b/c there will be more activities for them. Has anyone stayed there? The only thing I am worried about is race day traffic. We were told by the campground that the city of Indy offers a shuttle from a few different points in the city to the track for $15 round trip. Is anyone familiar with this. That would be $60 for the shuttle vs probably $25 to park near the track. But, do the shuttles get any priority in traffic. I would be willing to pay the additional $ if I don't have to sit in traffic for 3-4 hours. Thanks for any input.

I think that KOA is about 15-18 miles east of the city. In order to get to the public transportation (city buses) you will need to get to the downtown area. You will get on the bus downtown and it will take you to the first turn of the Speedway. That would be great if you had tickets in the first turn and not so good if your tickets are in the 3rd or 4th turn, long hike to get to your seats. After the race, all of the buses are staged just outside of the first turn, when full, go to downtown and return to the staging area for another load of passengers.

To answer your question, the buses do in fact have a special route which is used by taxis, buses and escorted vehicles (10th St.). There are pluses and minuses to using these buses. You are correct that they, at a minimum, move fairly rapidly after loading. However, as previously mentioned, a lot depends on where your seats are located, weather conditions, when you get to the buses for loading.

Not sure if this is helpful but would be willing to discuss any other questions that you have.

Our seats are on the front stretch near the first turn. KOA is looking pretty good about right now.

walt7474,
We did the bus from downtown one year for the Indy 500, it was easy to get to the track, horrible trying to get on a bus after the race! We waited in a line for the buses about 2 hours. The next year we parked at the Yellow Cab lot for free at I70 and Holt Road then took one of their cabs to the track for $45.00. They run the same restricted route the buses do. Catching a cab after the race was much easier and a lot faster than the bus. I live an hour from Indy and I was home within 2 hours of the race finish. I think $45.00 is the flat rate one way no matter how many people are in the cab, but there were just two of us that day so I could be wrong.
