178 between I5 and Kernville

We are planning to take the grandkids camping on the Kern River in July at Rivernook campground. Does anyone have any experience with 178 between the 5 and that campground? The mountain directory isnít very positive

I've done it in a 33' class A.

It's a bit tight when you're getting close to Isabella and paralleling the river

Depending what you're driving (or pulling) and how comfortable you are, it's doable

BUT>>>>>The 395 route is much more RV friendly

Thanks, thatís what I thought when I looked at it. Our MH is 38í and the drive looked easier from 395. Itís just a lot longer from our start point. Weíll just have to leave early

Good choice, with 38' I'd recommend that

The 5 route would be a bit tight for you in some spots.

It's very misleading when you leave Isabella traveling south to the 5. It's a modern 4 lane highway for a few miles then the road narrows to a 2 lane easy ride for a few more then the road tightens significantly due to large protruding rocks on the sides

Happy trails!
