189 from Provo through Heber City - tunnel clearance

I am thinking about a trip North up HWY 189 from Provo, UT through Heber City, then up I80 and I84, coming out to I15 up at S Ogden.

I plan to make the trip early April, and will likely need to keep an eye on the road conditions.

According to my coach specs I am 12 ft 11 inches in height. I have never actually measured the coach, and I am sure that does not include anything for the CB and radio antennas.

From what I can tell from research there is a tunnel that is 13' 5" on that route. I am conservative with my height maximums, and I generally avoid anything less than 14 ft., although I have been under overpasses slightly less than that.

While I can signal ahead of time and take up the center of 2 lanes in a tunnel (many years ago I hauled oversized loads as a trucker) I am spooked by the 13' 5" height.

I am 72 ft long overall with my trailer, and while the route will require me to keep an eye on the weather, I can't do anything about low clearance.

I can see that others have travelled this route with similar coaches, but I don't see any mention of height concerns or antennas.

Any input from others is appreciated!

Thanks.

It's a very popular RV route and we've driven it with our 40' motorhome. Semi trucks drive it. You'll have no issues. Beautiful drive!

Are there antenna clearance issues ?

Ours was still intact! Truckers have antennas, also. You're good.

The last time I was through that tunnel a couple of years ago they have turned it into a controlled tunnel with only one traffic lane down the middle. The let a few vehicles through on one side and then the other side. Way before you reach the tunnel there is a sign posted with the max height and a chance to turn around but I don't remember what that height now is.

Good Luck and Safe Travels!

Here's a YouTube of a semi truck driving the route. It's not a controlled lane. The tunnel is around 12:40 minutes. This was taken on a day with lots of construction cones. That driver is confident!

Actually, as I read this again I realized that I am completely wrong. I read Utah and tunnel and my mind went to the tunnel at the top of Zion, which is not what you’re talking about. Oh well, senior moments are wonderful!!

Safe Travels!

Thanks twogypsies.

I am back at attempting to plan this route.

Back in another lifetime I was a trucker, sometimes hauling large over dimensional loads.

Most CB antennas on trucks are mirror mounted, very seldom extending beyond the established 13' 6" total height limit for semis.

Entegra specs show my 2014 Anthem as being 12' 11" in height. However, referencing my past experience as a trucker, I am one cautious dude when it comes to dimensions and weight.

I am curious if anyone on the forum has actually measured knows what the height of a 2014 Anthem is, measuring to the tips of the CB and radio antenna.

Thanks to all the folks posting, I am reading the posts and I am still investigating!

There's an Entegra owner's forum on this site. That might be the best place to ask. Or call the mfg.

I have been planning for an Utah trip as well for this August and had concerns over the tunnel in Provo Canyon as well. I found a document from the Utah DOT that listed anything with a clearance less than 14.5 feet and this tunnel was not on it. However I found truckers maps that did list the tunnel with a clearance of 13 feet 5 inches. It was so confusing. Then I found out how they measure the clearance of a tunnel with a round top. That measure the height from the very edge of the pavement up to the top of the tunnel. If you watch the video above where the truck goes through the tunnel there is a pretty wide shoulder and it probably is 13 feet 5 inches at the far edge of the shoulder pavement but in the center of the lane it is probably more than 14.5 feet since it is not on the Utah DOT clearance document. Also watching the video there is not any low clearance signs which I believe in Utah have to be posted for anything less than 14.5 feet. If we pay attention and not drive in the shoulder we should be fine.

Here’s yet another link to another thread right here on this forum that I had started about pretty much the same topic.

T Roy,

Yesterday I took out the ladder and got on top of the coach to do a regular inspection.
Entegra brochure for a 2014 Anthem says it is 12ft 11in to the top of the satellite dish.
While up there I took some measurements as follows:
Sat dish to roof = 11 1/2 inches
Radio antenna to roof = 30 1/4 inches
CB Antenna to roof = 28 3/4 inches.

According to my math and using Entegra specs this means our coach would apparently be 14.47 ft tall with the antennas standing fulling upright. I have been under 14ft overpasses at about 30mph and have never heard an antenna make contact (might have missed that) The radio antenna is spring loaded, and the CB antenna is fairly flexible. I know they would be bending back at 50-60 mph but I don't know how much.

So, I am back to the drawing board.

Thanks for the links, I am going to read them now.
