375 Around El Paso

We are thinking of taking 375 around the north side of El Paso. We would be heading west on I-10, take 375 heading north and follow it around El Paso until we rejoin I-10 north of El Paso. This looks like a trucker route. Has anyone tried this route? How is it though the mountains north of town. It looks like it is only about 4 miles further and avoids the El Paso traffic.

I'd use it, there is a lot less traffic on it than there is on I 10. It's four lanes, with controlled access, from I 10 on the east side to US 54 north of town. West of US 54 it's Transmountain Road and it's a four lane road most of the way over the mountain where it reconnects with I 10 almost in NM. You can take 54 down to I 10 or Transmountain over the mountain. Transmountain is a steep road, up and down, with a few curves, but nothing really difficult.

In my opinion, it is THE way around El Paso downtown. Yes, a little hilly but certainly better than downtown. My unit made the pass without issue. Slower than posted speed limits, yes, but just fine.

I drove thru El Paso last week and remained on I-10 all the way. It must have been around 3pm or thereabouts. I did not find it particularly busy or burdened with construction. My Waze app was telling me I was going to save time staying on I-10, so I did.

Just one more data point for your consideration.

I just did it a couple of weeks ago in early afternoon and it was a great way to by-pass El Paso - not much traffic and no issues going over the hill.

375 is way more scenic but there are about 5 long duration stop lights. 22 years experience. No good RV parks in ElPaso. Las Crusas or Van Horn better. It is a safe city but many bad drivers. Avoid rush hours downtown.

We've done 3 ways at El Paso... going straight through between 9-2 or Sundays; taking 395 and the 'hill' is short and not bad for us and another way around which is flatter. All are just fine.

Thanks for all the help. It sounds like most of you prefer avoiding I-10 through El Paso.

Where are the stop lights? I only remember one at the tie-in on the west end. We've been using that route for the last 7 years. During construction, it was definitely less advantageous, but now that they have finished the fly-overs on the east end, it seems pretty seamless. One good hill to climb / descend. The rest is just freeway.

The mountain pass is an easy climb and downhill.

We did I10 last year and the bypass last month. Stayed at the Walmart just before starting the climb west. We preferred it a lot over I10. Much more scenic and probably safer.

Just went thru 2 days ago. I10 was no big deal going thru the construction zones in mid-day.
