AL State Highways: Cheaha to Lakepoint State Park

Newbie seeking route advice (Class A 34" with no toad).

Google maps offers 3 routes from Cheaha to Lakepoint which are within a few miles/minutes difference. Per Cheaha website 49 is a "great route".

Route 1: 281-431 (thru Lafayette) then 83 to I85 then 169 to 431 to165; or
Route 2: 49-77 (thru Lafayette) then 83 picking up I85 then 169 to 431 to 165; or

Route 3: 49 (toward Dadeville)-280 then 169 to 431.

RV Trip Wizard in standard routing suggests:
49 only to Lineville then due West to Wedowee picking up 280 to 431 to 165

RV Trip Wizard in RV routing is the same as above, but staying on 280 toward Columbus avoiding the section of 169 between Opelika and Seale

The RV routing adds about 30 minutes.

It seems like Route 3 from Google and Standard Routing from RV Trip Wizard are the ones with the least turns and we've been on 280 before going into Alexander City/Wind Creek State Park and it was a good ride.

Thanks in advance.

Alabama has good roads, Any of the 3 routes should work. Your fun will be getting up and down the mountain. Highway 281 is a "ridge" road and scenic highway. Getting up and down the mountain will be the hardest parts of your trip. I would use Highway 431 to get on and off of 281.

Not sure where AL165 enters into this. That I recall the resort is accessed directly from US431. In any case, I would either take 431 all the way (thru Phenix City) (431 is also 280 from I85 down to where 431 turns south in Phenix City) or take AL169 from Opelika to the zig zag at Crawford and then to 431 north of Seale.

10 extra miles to go all the way to Phenix City.

Thank you Andy and Charles,

We have not done this run yet; it is later this Spring. I'm a planner.

Mission Accomplished

We just returned from this trip. As Andy noted, the route into and out of Cheaha was the toughest part. DH (who is also the DD) didn't care for the driving, but other than the grade and slow speed required by the curves it wasn't bad and we had a great time at Eufala; not so much at Cheaha.

The most significant thing was being prepared by exporting the route from RV Trip Wizard to Excel and printing. We needed the printed directions because we didn't have AT&T service.

Will these directions help? Nice park and one we'll remember for fire ants and ants in our RV!
