Is this timing OK?

Jasper may be a little cold in May (Whistler Campground - where we stayed - is closed in 2019). You might want to plan most of your stay in Jasper, Banff, Lake Louise in late August or early September on your way home. But Alaska in June-August is perfect. If you experience mosquitoes, it will be in early summer; we went July to mid-September and didn't encounter many at all.

We think alike. After looking at a map we are leaning toward going up the west side(Kootenay(sp?)) etc then heading to Alaska, some stateside stops first.

We weren't planning on this tri[ this year but our house has sold(had a bidding war) and we will close by the end of March. Perfect time to start wandering since we are down in Phoenix and have a lot of driving to do, meandering all the way.

We drove through Banff and Jasper and stayed for 4 days west of Jasper near Hinton.

We were surprised at the huge swaths of dead brown timber that we saw along our trip. Upon stopping at Jasper NP Campground, (forget the name but less than 10 miles from Jasper) the Ranger told us that 80% of their AB forest would be dead in 2-3 years due to the pine beetle.
This Campground was full of tinder dry dead trees. It made us nervous driving through it in our toad.

This was in June 2018.

YMMV

Alaska 2018

Last year, we took our RV on a cruise on the Alaska ferry from Whittier, Alaska, home to Bellingham, Washington. I wrote about the trip in my blog:

https://mamaloi.com/2018/09/16/insid...to-bellingham/

Here's another take:

The State of Alaska may be terminating the route to Bellingham at the end of September 2019, so if it's on your bucket list to do, you better hurry.
