Question Alaska Trip July6-August ? Route ?

I think I will leave the coach at home and take the Jeep Cherokee to Alaska from Missoula, Mt. Been to Alaska a few times but never drove up. From Missoula, which of the three access routes during this time frame would be the most scenic ? I would take 93 north from here and work over to Calgary if I take the East access route. Best way back ? We plan on a combination of inns and tent camping since we will not be in the coach. Any and all advice appreciated. Thanks.

Jim

Unless you want to go to Calgary I would stay on 93 all the way to Jasper, from Jasper you can go west then north or east a few miles to 40 and take that north to Grande Prairie. From there it's 43 until it turns into 97 then 1. The icefield highway (93) is a beautiful drive.
From Grande Cache to to past Fort Nelson is kind of boring but after that there is lots to see again.

Craig1960 nailed it.

Be aware that rooms are both pricey and scarce that time of year, so consider calling ahead for reservations as much as a week or more in advance.

I'm partial to the Calgary route through Banff and Jasper National Park. Definitely spend a few days in that area. We visited that area last year and were awestruck most of the time (and we live in Alaska). Then head west to pick up 16 to Prince George. From there go north to take the Al Can or head West to take the Cassiar. Both routes are beautiful and I've done both multiple times. Maybe go one way on the way up there and take the other on the way back down. You could also head south out of Prince George on the way back to vary your scenery even more.

What ever you decide, take your time and enjoy the journey!
