Albuquerque to Tallahassee

MapQuest show the quickest route going I-40 to Hwy 287 into Dallas then to Jackson MS on I-20. Then down Hwy 49 and Hwy 98 to Mobile (I-10). Anyone have an opinion on the overall route and especially Hwys 49 & 98 in MS/AL?

Good roads/bad roads, how to get around Dallas? Thanks

That's the route we take every year when heading west/east from Fla.
Roads in La are in rough shape.
Our latest route through DFW was north on 635 to 287. Not bad.
In Mobile take 98 to 65 to 10. Don't take 98 through the city. Or take 49 south to 10 in Gulfport. Longer but less stop and go traffic the 98.

Good luck

I have driven much of that route in the last few years, overall it is good, and there is no easy / better alternative to get around the bad spots.

Right, approaching Mobile take I-65 north or south and connect with I-165 or I-10 rather than through the city. Note that the connection from I-165 from the north to I-10 eastbound is rather screwy. Also beware that the US-98 tunnel has low clearance so don't go that way.

Can't find the tunnel. Where is it near?

I think they are referring to the depression era Bankhead tunnel in downtown Mobile, it parallels the I-10 tunnel just a block or two to the north. Not only is it tight in vertical clearance, it is also tight side to side.

p.s. there is no way around Dallas, though I-20 through Dallas is not all that bad as it skirts the south side of the metroplex 8-10 miles south of downtown. If your really want to miss Dallas, take US 82 across from Wichita Falls to Texarkana, it is a good road, I think all 4 lane now, with 75 mph speed limit most of the way. Then I49 from Texarkana down to Shreveport

The old US-98 Bankhead Tunnel runs parallel to the I-10 Wallace Tunnel to the north. Overhead clearance is 12 feet.

I might suggest skipping DFW all together.

A little ways after Wichita Falls, TX you can catch US-82 and take it all the way across "North Texas". It will end up in Texarkana, you can catch I-49 and drop down to Shreveport and get on 20 there.

Thinking about US-82 over to US-69 then down to I-20. Is US-69 a good road or is going over to Texarkana a better route? Thanks

Uhhh, there's really not a clear answer.

Taking 82 to Texarkana and down is a little longer. A good bit of 82 is four lane and a little better road overall but, I-20 is very good.

Taking 69 down to Lindale is a little quicker but 69 is two lane road I think the whole way. But like I said it gets you to 20 quicker.

For me if I wanted to get from A-B I'd take 69, if I wanted to take a more rural, scenic route I'd take 82.

P.S. A couple of recommendations;

Oasis RV Resort, westside of Amarillo

Winstar Casino RV Park just north of Gainesville, TX in OK (join the players club and get a free night).

It has been a several years since I drove Hwy 69 north of I-20, though I can tell you the last time I drove the section south of I-20 it was 4 lane for about 50% of the route, with a good bit of the rest actively becoming 4 lane (construction zones), though that was 18-24 months ago.
