Amarillo to Oklahoma City suggested route

We like to avoid interstates when possible because our experience so far has been that state roads, etc, are in better condition, have way fewer semi's and have interesting small towns to travel through. If interstates are the best option then we take them. However, we'd rather go out of our way then suffer on rough roads! Anyone enjoyed an interesting (pothole, expansion joint free) route from Amarillo to OK City? My understanding is that Oklahoma roads are pretty rough. Thanks for sharing your experiences!

It's pretty much a straight line from AMA to OKC on I-40.

You're really going to have to go out of your way to get there and the state roads in Oklahoma are horrible for the most part.

Take HWY 60 to Pampa, then HWY 152 to OKC. I drive a lot of Okla. secondary roads, I don't find them to be very bad.

That's such a short stretch that it's not worth to get off I-40. Via I-40 it 260 miles.

Via 287/62 to Lawton then I-44 to OK City is 297 miles.

Both routes are boring.

Now.... if you would have planned a different route to OK City from your starting point way back when, assuming it wasn't Amarillo, then you'd have more flexibility.

I agree with you.... interstates are the pits.

US route 66 runs/ran between the 2 cities mentioned. You could hop on and off I40 where 66 is still open.
