I have not driven the road. I went to Chama via Durango, Pagosa Springs.
We took the Train to Antonio, and the tour Bus back to Chama. The bus had no problem making the drive. It was a good and scenic road. The buses run it several times a day. I was in a 40'DP pulling a mini van. Then to ABQ via US84 south.
We were there late Sept a little snow in the hills. Mar could be the same. Give the folks at the train a call.

Excerpts from "Mountain West Directory" there are two mountain passes on this road, both over 10,000 feet
  1. " good two lane road "
  2. "15, 20, 30 mile per hour curves"
  3. "7% grades"
I have not driven this road ... just looked it up in my directory

I did this exact trip in August with a 1999 Chevy chassis housing a 34' Damon Daybreak with an aging 454. I had no difficulty using the gears for their intended purpose. I stayed in the lower gears most of the time. Yep, it was a bit slow...an F-350 pulling a monster 5th wheel swept past me going uphill.

I'm certain you'll have no troubles. Jus' don't sleep on the brakes.

You'll love the train ride. Best one I've EVER been on.

Bring a quality camera.

That campground 1/4 mile from the Chama station is great.

Rio Chama RV park.

I have driven it several times over the years, good road, the mountain route directory is right on. One night late coming from OK. in a Honda car. Had a very bad snow storm. At Chama the New Mexico DOT DIDNOT plow the road, we only got stuck one. The CO DOT did plow, followed one @ 10 mph for a long way, and grateful it was there. The point......make sure the weather is good and road cleared.

March is a bit early to be towing over one of our 10,000 ft passes; expect some snow. Be prepared to overnight in the valley, waiting out a storm. The sun is usually back out in a day or 2 and quickly melts the snow below 10,000 ft. But spring comes much later above 10,000 ft.
Hiway 17 is a good 2 lane road. You'll have some steep (7%) sections, but nothing to worry about. In March, I'd be more concerned with the weather than the hiway.

Roadrunner x 2

I was born and raised around Chama. Had a sand and gravel business there up untill I sold out a few years ago. Was called Brazos Gravel and Construction. I have traveled that road many times. When I got married, I brought my wife to be from Lincoln Neb. over Hy17.It was gravel at that time, and being a flat lander, going over Cumbres, and La Manga passses, she was sick and crying before we hit the bottom. She married me anyway & have been together for allmost 58 years! After all that , no problem except in the winter or freak snow storm in the spring. I was over it last year in a 40 ft. Holliday Rambler d/p with 2011 Terrain toad. Stop by and visit FIRST BAPTIST Church I was chairman of the deacons for many years. Tell them jack sent you, they will pass the offering plate twice by you!! Good traveling & God Bless
