I bet you could find details on those tunnels on the states DOT website. See if google will give you any results on those tunnels.

Why not just take the easy route? I85-I26-I40.......... I really don't consider the I40 grades up / down that big of deal.

Or, I985 - 23 - 74 in Sylva, over to I40. All 4 lane, just a couple of short steep grades north of Franklin and in Sylva. This also avoids going over on 441 through the park.

Best route and roads is 441 north to Franklin NC. Follow 441 Bypass around Franklin and continue to follow 441 into Cherokee and into the GSMNP and across to Tennessee at Newfound Gap. It is a little steep with a couple of turns but thousands of RVs make this trip up and down every year.
When into Tennessee, continue down the mountain. Lots of pull outs to stop and gawk. Mind your speed and go slow, pulling out on occasion to let following traffic pass. There are a couple of tunnels and a couple of switchbacks. not a problem. Tunnel height is measured at the sides, not the center. Use caution if it bothers you and crowd the center line. We have done this trip several times in a tall MH.
Toward the bottom you will see it start to level out.
As you come close to the park boundaries you will see the GSMNP welcome center for the Tennessee side. Look for the Gatlinburg by-pass and take that toward Pigeon Forge. The road will become 4 lane with a creek between the n bound and s bound lanes. Continue with caution as there is always someone wanting to stop and look or turn.
The trip is a piece of cake if you use care and have a great trip

I agree with Doc. I have been through the park on 441 without issue a few times in my old 35 foot Class A pulling my Jeep. Take your time and enjoy the views!
