Will totally depend on your level of Mountain Driving Skills - I have always taken RT 64 - I Love the Mountain drive - BUT this is the only Road I have Driven that I had to stop on a Hairpin turn to let a Tractor Trailer back up - Just not enough room - He easily backed up and I drove past - We both knew to slow down and stop and with the Toad I could not back up.

One Beautiful Drive - Love Lake Toxaway.

Just stay in your comfort zone - Other Option I think is RT 74 which might be just as Beautiful a Drive - Like I said - stay in your zone - these are old roads in Real Mountains.

Best of Luck,

Quickest route would be 74 west to Murphy and 19 to Blairsville. You could also take 441 to Franklin then 64 to Hayesville, 69 to 76 to Blairsville. The route through Brevard to Cashiers is a lot of mountain driving and not for the timid. 64 west of Franklin has some long grades and great views. It will be a beautiful drive any way you go.

You are likely looking at either US-64 or US-76 thru the mtns and since I've only done one of them and know it's doable, I'd look at I-40 W, US-74 to Sylva, US-23 to Clayton, then US-76 to Blairsville. We love camping in the SW NC and NE GA areas.

Just curious - which route does it look like you will take?

Late October should be Beautiful - think I would go one way and come back the other - Just a Beautiful Part of the Country.

W. J. Demo,

What type of RV do you have? Depending on which way you go and if you have a 45 ft. coach, there are parts of 64 that is not recommended.

We have just returned from Lake Toxaway/Asheville area (twice in the last 6 weeks), it's absolutely beautiful and much cooler! We stayed at the Mountain Falls Motorcoach Resort both times.

Safe travels,
Mark

I am liking the route suggested by Big Dude. It is a bit longer; but looks to be a bit flatter. The terrain view in Google Maps has been helpful. I have a 36 foot gasser towing a Miata and it is just a one way trip from Pittsburgh to home in Panama City Beach. Staying a week at Crossing Creeks on our way home.

I use most of Big Dudes route but not all the way to Clayton...you will go around 2 sides of a triangle. At Franklin continue on 64 as in znt1186...64 to Hayesville and then 69 to US76. Go through the 3 traffic lights in Blairsville (be in left lane before the last one as you’ll be turning left 100 yards after it.

Local Knowledge is alway the Best (Three traffic lights and get in the left lane) sort of gives it away

Yea but Crossing Creek will not show you the pictures of the flood water up to the middle of the windows in the clubhouse...buyer beware although this normally only happens in the winter when you should be in Fla with your rig. Hopefully these owners will be successful.

Anyone buying property adjacent to water should assume that it has or will be subject to flooding - common sense in my book.

I ended up taking 74 west to Murphy and 19 to Blairsville. Other than a two-lane stretch along the Nantahalla river, it was actually a pretty easy drive. The two-lane stretch was a bit narrow and had some visibility issues on left -hand bends; but, had no serious grades or switchbacks.

Thanks to everyone that provided the various route suggestions.

Did we pass each other day before yesterday? I came up from near Athens Ga through Helen, and then on up to US19 at Murphy through the Nantahalla to Cherokee. I stopped at the Nantahalla Outdoor Center for what used to be(30 years ago) out of this world homemade Blueberry pie. These days barely thawed frozen Apple cobbler
