Asheville to Pittsburgh

We are staying east of Asheville near I40. Looking for the best route to go North. Coming in to Asheville from the south, I-26 about 10 miles out of town, was the worst road we have been on in our motorhome- the expansion joints so bad had to slow to 30mph until we found the first exit.
Google says to go up I-26 to I81 then to i77.

Does anyone know if the I26 road condition improves out of Asheville? Otherwise, will probably go to I40 east then north on i77.

Plan on taking us19 past New River Gorge to I79, which seems like an ok road.

Thank you
Don

Don,

Your right about I-26 south of Asheville, but the road north of Asheville is fine. We travel the route every fall and spring to and from our snowbird location. Just north of Asheville it is not yet officially Interstate, but four lane. The road over the mountains is in excellent condition and traffic volume is much lower than I-77.

Safe Travels!
Jim
