Question Augusta, GA to Hamilton MT in Sept - places to see?

We will be traveling back home to Hamilton, MT in early September and plan on taking 10 days - 2 weeks. Any suggestions for best route and places to see/things to do?
Would like to avoid the big cities (i.e. Atlanta, St. Louis, etc.) as I am fairly new at this. Any suggestions would be appreciated! Definitely plan on stopping at Mt. Rushmore (Recommendations for campgrounds?)!
Thanks!

With the limited info given it appears that Custer is the direction you plan on traveling so from there to Cody - possibly Wind River - Chief Joseph Highway - Beartooth Highway - then the drive into and through Yellowstone.

MAP - https://www.bing.com/maps?osid=94262...=2&form=S00027

I'd look at something like shown the the attached Map.

Best of Luck,

If you drive 400 miles/day, you are looking at six days of travel which doesn't leave a lot of time for site seeing. If this is your first trip out this way, I would work my way up to I-90 (I've done this several times from E. TN) then a high priority would be the Black Hills and depending on what you like to do, you could easily spend all of your time there. I would drive into the badlands a little ways to get a sense of it and stop at Wall Drug for a little while.

It is hard to get from Augusta to anywhere west without going through Atlanta.
I go through there a lot and it's easy as long as you avoid rush hours (700-930, 400-630). I'd go Atlanta, Nashville, St Louis and do that part as fast as I could. Then I would relax the pace and try to see something along the way every day. Here is a trip report I wrote from one of our trips "out there".

If you do end up in St. Louis I would recommend taking Hwy 61 north out of there. It is all 4 lane and follows the Mississippi river. There are spots along there with historical sites. In SD. definitely check out Wall Drug and take the Badlands road. There are plenty of cg's all along the way. In Mitchell you have the Corn Palace. It is interesting and doesn't involve a long stop. In September Custer State Park has the buffalo roundup which is interesting to see. There are a lot of people and it does take a while to get in and out. They have an rv parking lot on the south (I believe) so perhaps one could get in there the night before and stay until the traffic is gone.
