Anyone who has spent any time in So. FL knows that if you're not doing 10 over the limit, you're gonna get run over. Unless you're driving aggressively, the cops won't stop you.
On the highway, I usually drive the MH 60 - 65 just because.

What was the name of that Florida town where the most lucrative speed trap on the east coast was set up? Plenty of posts on here about that. Chief's post is amusing. Hard to believe anyone is that naive these days.
There's a section of Rt 6 here on Cape Cod where the staties always sit. It has a rest area so they can go inside and use the facilities. For the entire length of the 4 lane part of route 6, where the speed limit is 55, the average speed is 70. The section of road 1 mile before the rest area, the locals drop down to 55 and the New Yorkers and people from Conn. are lined up in the breakdown lane getting a ticket. Or maybe they're getting a break, I don't know.

I admit that I was speeding - by 2 MPH. Speed traps do exist; I know of several in Georgia. Unfortunately, I did not know about this one

Trucks (and motorhome, trailers etc) should be driving at a lower speed than posted (I was taught that in the military drivers training and I am sure truck driving schools teach something similar). Everyone should drive a slower than posted limit at night or when the dry conditions change, or their vehicle is not tip-top shape (needs tires, brakes etc) IF they want to drive the safest. Oh, and let's not forget some of the drivers on the road are not exactly in tip-top shape themselves when it comes to reaction times due to age, physical limitations (permanent-arthritis, eye sight etc, or something as simple as a sore back and you aren't moving as fast cause it hurts) or maybe over tired, or had a drink with dinner, or an argument with a loved one and you're wound up a little.

As a retired Transportation Engineer I agree with this: we designed the roads to a "design speed", but there are many other things that enter into it and change over time like traffic congestion, new construction etc.

Ok then answer this. I'm driving down a 2 lane country road. Not thickly settled but rural. There's good visibility in all directions and the road is fairly straight with gentle curves well built up on the outside circumference of the turn. The speed limit is 50 MPH.
I cross a town line, same road, same conditions, same "transportation engineer" designed the road, the speed limit drops to 35 MPH. And there just happens to be a cop sitting there. Are you really trying to convince people that it's really all engineering?
I was born at night, but it wasn't last night.
Sorry, not drinking the kool-aid.

Many years ago I had a discussion with a small town police officer in Northern CA. He said the tourists do get the most tickets - the town was so small that he didn't want to write a ticket to the plumber or the plumbers wife or kids, same for the electrician, fellow church members, his kids teachers, little league coaches and so on. They all received verbal warnings but tourist were fair game. Whether that was true or not I don't know but it sure seemed reasonable.

Why is there a cop waiting in the town when the speed limit drops from 55 down to 35? Because you are entering the town limits where commerce is happening, people and children are about, school zones etc, and you are supposed to slow down to the marked speed limit. Apparently people are not slowing down.
I do not consider myself naive, nor do I drive 10 mph over the speed limit here in FL. Actually I drive 60 -62 even in my car--I like getting almost 30mpg as opposed to 26 or 27 at 70. I am never late for anything--I'm retired. I find it less stressful and also amusing when somebody comes flying up behind me in the right lane like I am breaking the law going to slow for them. Actually, the minimum speed on any interstate is 45mph. If you drive slower you have to have your flashers on.
Last night on 60 minutes I saw an interesting segment on policing. They were in Cleveland and the neighborhood with the highest crime, and it was a b;\lack neighborhood. They were in a boxing gym talking with the locals and the 2 beat cops. The locals made the statement it seems whenever it involves a black man and a white cop the black man gets shot. The white cops there were on the job over 20 years in the same beat and said they had made over 450 gun related arrests and neither of them had ever fired their weapon except at the training range. My point being it seems there is a similiar point of view regarding some of the comments about police and traffic stops in this thread.
I stand by my previous posts.

They were not the welcoming committee. Must have been their small-town version of a sobriety checkpoint. I am all for law and order, but I don't like the feeling of living in a police state. I witnessed that kind of behavior when I visited communist Cuba...and I don't like it.
The town of Hampton, just to the north, was disbanded by Governor Scott for operating a speed trap for many years. Seems the powers to be bought a couple block stretch of land on Hwy 301 and annexed it to the town, located about a half a mile away. Also seems hundreds of thousands of dollars in speeding fines just disappeared from the town's books and into people's pockets............

It is just the simple truth. Leo has many faces. Good one and bad ones. There are plenty of headlines about bad cops too. Near me in a little town called westampton, you can see the parking lot full of cars on Thursday. That's Court day. When the parking lot is not full on Thursday because of insufficient tickets being issued guess what happens the next day.
Well I'll tell ya. They set up a road block right outside town hall and check for everything so that they can fill up the parking lot. Money money money.
The rest of the time they sit with their computer data camera checking every licence plate that enters town. Please don't tell me they don't have a QUOTA - AND please don't drive under the speed limit in front of me. It's a Jersey thing. creates road rage.

I have family living near Hampton for almost 40 years. When I tell them I am coming down for a visit they always strongly remind me to drive under the speed limit in Hampton, Waldo & Starke. So I do and thus far no problems.

Well I can tell you I never had a quota my entire career. If we blocked off traffic for a safety check, only the dummy's that continued to break the law got a ticket. Don't classify all Leo's by what makes the 6 o'clock news. Until you have walked in my shoes, you have nothing but your opinion.
