Avoiding Trees On Way to James Island City Park, Charleston, SC.

Can I get my 13' 6" high 5th wheel into this park safely from Highway 17?

The last time I was there (probably 8 years ago) it was a nightmare driving my lower class A through Charleston. I am not going that way ever again.

It looks like I can off highway 17 going East on Main Road, take that to River Road (SRS-10-91) and then SC700 to Riverview Drive.

I search a lot of threads but didn't find anything recent.

Thanks.

Avoiding Tress On Way to James Island City Park, Charleston, SC.

Just saw this so you may have already figured it out. Itís been over a year since we were there last but I take Folly Road (Hwy 171) from US17 then right on Maybank Hwy (Rt 700) then left onto Riverland Drive to the park entrance. You will encounter low hanging trees so just take your time. Iím 12í6Ē and always have some Spanish moss on my antennas when I get there. I once - never again - took Central Park Rd. Low trees there too plus road is narrower and thereís a left turn at a stop sign at the end that is very difficult due to traffic volume. Hope someone with more recent info can confirm.

DHE here. The county needs to be contacted and request made to trim the trees due to the large volume of RV traffic that goes To the park from both directions. Those on this thread should all contact the county and request this to be carried out. The more complaints made, I would think the better this situation will be addressed and corrected.

I guess if you had moss at 12' 6" then I'm not going. I'm at least 13' 3" but won't go near anything less than 13' 6". Too bad for me - it would have been a nice stay. I'll find a park further out.

Thanks for the information!

Following....

We are going in December and our new rig is 12'10". We went last year in our Fleetwood Jamboree which is listed out at 12'. There were some low trees but we got through ok. Wondering how much of a difference the extra height will make.

Thanks, DHE. That was my alternate spot.

The kids are going to Folly Beach in Sept. and want me to stay in an AirBnB but I'm not sure I want to do that. We're still not even sure we'll go at all. Just always weighing our options.

Oak plantation is s good option. Weíve stayed there a few times. Only problem there is getting onto Hwy 17 from the park. Its a busy road and the park entrance is near an intersection.

All right my friends. I contacted the PARKS RECREATION COMMISSION for James Island Parks and spoke with David Bennett who heads it. He understands the problem and will be meeting with the commission this morning and will address the problem of the over hanging limbs. It is a DOT problem and they will be addressing the problem With them
Following their meeting. I hope this will resolve our problem.

Follow up to my last message to you all. David Barnett called immediately after the commission meeting was over and assure me he had put one of the commission members in charge to get the cutting of trees accomplished with a strongly worded letter to the Department of Transportation. I will be going II the campground on November 2nd for a week. I am hoping the tree limbs are cut by then. If I heat anything further I will let you all know. Shalom.

Those limbs are the reason we don't go there any more. Tried two different routes and still looked like we were going to lose an A/C in a few places

Dear friends, in continuing the quest to get tree limbs cut along Riverland Drive/road going to James Island county park, my phone calls have been returned from various individuals who have been extremely helpful from the Public Service Commission as well as James Island County Park Commission. Now we all need to be involved to get this problem accomplished. The next step is this in the hands of the Department of Transportation. The work order is #378403. The DOT telephone number is 843-740-1655. Give them two weeks to get this work order processed and then start calling the aforementioned number in this message to see if work has been started on this tree trimming project. They have been requested to cut the limbs a minimum of 15 feet above the road. If everyone participates who love camping at James Island County park we can get this done and our RV's will not be damaged by low hanging limbs. Peace to all.
