Take a look on Google Maps

I40 route 404 mi, 6H 16 min

I40 to I17 502 mi, 7H 4 min

100 miles extra on the super slabs adds 98 miles. That should tell you something about the difference is speed. A good look at the route on Google Maps will give you a clue why.

I'm not saying you can't go either way or should go/not go either way but I am pointing out that this is one of those cases where staying on the super slab might take a bit longer but leave you a lot less stressed. It depends on your tolerance for tight turns and steep grades. If this is intended to be the first of many visits I would do the super slab the first time and check the other route with the towed. YMMV.

Great Comment. I have never been a fan of Salt River Canyon in any RV. One little mistake or just a large rock in the road and it could be your last RV trip. Mountain Switchbacks can have Rocks in the road. The state posts signs to: "Watch for Rocks".
