Kind of depends on where you're heading going West. But at 1st blush, just looking at a map that a more direct route west might be via I-68 to I-79 to I-64, or possibly just heading I-70W. But where you want to end up will dictate how you go.

We've made that trip several times and tried both the turnpike and I 70.

I guess if it were me and I was going to Chicago I would take I80, the turnpike. It shaves off miles and time in exchange for tolls.

When we drive it we take I70 to avoid all the tolls. Course I'm retired and in no hurry, and I try to go around Chicago. If you take I70 then at Indianapolis you would take I65 up to Chicago.

Have a Chicago Beef Sandwich with hot jardiniŤre and wet for me.

From Gettysburg take US30 west through Chambersburg and then join I70. There are some mountain passes, but not bad.

Or at Pittsburg go north on I76 to join I 80.
Naw, I'd just take I 70.

Rt81 south from Chambersburg isnít really through mountains just hills. Itís an easy driving highway with lots of trucks. A beautiful drive through Virginia in the fall.

You are quite right. It's a very nice drive, but they want to go west.

I do see where you're coming from with that. Sorry.

We crossed the Cumberland Gap one year during a heavy wet snow storm and half way up we encountered a motorhome, towing a car, driving slowly on the shoulder with their lights blinking, with all their slides out!

Visibility was quite bad with wet snow covering the windshield
so we quickly passed them, but have wondered ever since if they made it safely over the pass, and why the heck they ere out there in the first place.

As soon as we crossed over the pass, the snow stopped.
