I took this route in 2009. It is a small road but in good condition.

I took the road years back from Interior, SD all the way to Rapid City. Good two lane road with nice scenery. We had a wicked cross wind the whole ride.

Rode my motorcycle from Rapid City to Bad Lands and back by this road. No traffic and beautiful scenery as other have said.

We are in Rapid City KOA on Highway 44 and 44 to the the badlands is in good shape. You will not have any problems as long as you follow the road and not your GPS. Many complaints last year that the GPS units took a lot of tourists off on alternative destinations like dirt muddy roads.

mbass777:

We're full timers in a 45 ft. MH towing. Home base is out of Mitchell, SD where my wife's family is, and, we've taken Hwy. 44 through Platte, Winner, White River, etc., back and forth to the Hills a number of times. It's more enjoyable and relaxing than the freeway, so we'd surely recommend it.
