Bakersfield Ca to Palm Springs
Anyone taken 58 to 247 out of Barstow. And then to Yucca Valley and Desert Hot Springs. Looks like it avoids the San Bernardino and Redlands area.

Many times. There’s a bit of a hill but overall a nice enough drive.

It's a much better drive and a lot less traffic than other routes.

As Bob Caldwell states, Tehachapi pass is the hill.
To be more specific highway 58 is a 4 lane divided highway for much of its 36 mile length. The western side, Bakersfield to Tehachapi, is about 22 miles long with no section steeper than 6%, with many curves and is more technical than the eastern side.
The eastern side, Tehachapi to Barstow, is about 14 miles long and has many long straight sections with nothing greater that 6% either.
The land around Tehachapi is very flat with with fuel services available. The only time I've seen crashes is when big rains hit. We usually take this route in and out of California when visiting Zion, Grand Canyon, Joshua Tree and the alike. Our gas powered RV never drops below 40 mph climbing the hills.

247 is mostly 2 lane. Easy to do in any RV. You’re Out in the desert with few fuel stops. If there is forecast for any thunderstorms, the road can get closed.
If you want more freeway driving, 58 to 15 south to 210 east to 10 east.

portions of 58 east of tehachapi into barstow were rerouted and upgraded to 4 lanes a couple of years ago. there is a grade around techachapi but nothing difficult. depending on time of year you can get snow around tehachapi.

Techachapi on 58: EL 4064' It's 4-lane. The eastbound is gradual and spread out over a long distance. It's easy.
Westbound is a descent of 4-6% for about 22 miles with curves.

Yes, Yes many times. I love it. I don't have to go thru LA and that is a good thing. Nice little RV park next to a small grass air field just out of Tehachapi. Love the new freeway between Tehachapi and Barstow, all four lanes now. Good fuel stops also.

Made it to Palm Desert today. Wow, is Hwy 58 a great stretch of highway. May be the best I’ve seen in California. Straight and smooth and beautiful in the starkness of the high desert.
I did end up taking 247 to Twenty Nine Palms and then to I-10. While a decent drive though slow and hilly at times, not sure I’d do it again in our motor home. Probably would hook up with I-15 and head south to the 10...
Thanks for all the comments.

Be thankful you didn't take I-15 south into LA area. Victorville has terrible traffic. You did the right thing.
