I would go up through Harrisburg and pick up 81 to 78, 287, 87, 84 into Ct and then take 395 up so you can get to 495 around Boston. I never go tappan zee and try to route around New York even in the car.

The easiest way, even though there will be traffic, is 95 to Garden State to 287, 87, 84 to 691 (miss Hartford) to 91, back on 84, 90 to 495 which gets you back on 95. 395 does not connect with 84 or 90 to go north. 290 does go north from 90 in Auburn, but you do not want to go that way - 290 is under construction. (Trust me, we live in Auburn, and we drive out of our way to miss it). You have tolls, but they are worth it.
If, you decide to try the 81 route, just pick up my suggestion at 691 and your only toll would be the Newburgh Bridge and on 90.

Travel safe and enjoy ME.

Just came back yesterday. Took the tappian zee both ways. It was a breeze! RVs of all shapes and sizes were crossing the bridge.

The Tappan Zee is usually no difficulty, unless your reason for avoidance is not congestion related. If you continue north on I-87 you can connect with I-90 (Mass Pike) and head east that way. More miles and more tolls, but it will avoid the bridge.

Isn't the toll on the Tappan Zee just east bound?
