Banff to Hinton/Jasper in Alberta

Currently in Banff with the next stop Hinton/Jasper.

Both RV trip wizard and RV CoPilot are suggesting going east on 1 towards Calgary then north on 2 to Edmonton then west on 16. This is 440+ miles.

The more direct route is straight up 93/Icefields Parkway at about half the mileage and travel time.

We are in a 38’ class A with toad.

Anyone familiar with this road?

Yes ; Ice Fields Parkway , has been described as in need of a repave , it does have one very steep climb , but totally doable . Thousands or RVs do it every year .

I'm not usually going from Banff when heading to Jasper/Hinton , but I wouldn't hesitate to go the route . Take your time and expect " lookey loos " it's a very scenic drive , it was even more so before the icefields were hit by climate change .

93 for sure, nice drive, have done it many times with 40 ft. class a and toad. Not a fast drive but great scenery. Enjoy

Another great thing about the parkway is no trucks.

Stop at the glacier and have a hike up to the toe. Interesting how much it has receded in the last few years .

PS. Kamloops, Banff, Jasper and back home to Kamloops is a nice little trip we often enjoy.

This is why we don't solely rely on mapping programs or GPS. Get out a paper maps and pick a route then investigate it before driving it. We tend to go the way WE want to go. Scenic is excellent; fast - not so. Millions of big RVs have driven 93.

Drove it today with no problems.

Two lane well paved road the whole way. No cell service until about 15 miles south of Jasper.

Thanks for all the help.

Looking forward to 2023. Is June 1 too early to do Banff & Jasper? Trying to decide if we should do it on the trip to Alaska or wait for the trip home. Plan to do Glacier and Yellowstone on the return.

OP, drove the route last week of May , BUT, the road is in the Rocky Mountains , weather and road conditions are subject to change at a MOMENTS notice.

The same type of storm that closed Yellowstone , could just as easily happen , anywhere in the mountain chain .

Friend of ours is on that route now - she left Jasper today and she reported that she drove through some snow flurries yesterday on the way up the Icefields Parkway.

We've done it both ways. Around June 1 was just fine for us on the drive but we couldn't do the hikes we planned because of snow still on the trails. We did hike around Lake Louise and the snow was about 2' but so many had been on the trail that it was packed down well so didn't have to plod through it.

Early June the mountains are covered and the scenes are beautiful.

Toward the end of summer you can hike to your content but the mountains will be black because of lack of snow except for the very tops.

You could do both. . early & late, for different effects. Then there's weather. You can't count on it at any time.

Trip planners were probably set to avoid toll roads as you need a park pass.

Was on the icefield parkway both ways (LL to Jasper and then back to Saskatchewan River Crossing) just after the OP posted. Lots of viewpoints and trails at upper elevations still closed, as were campgrounds (which won't take more than a 24', 27' if lucky, unit. Weather was fine. Road good enough. Sailun S637s are M&S rated though I'm not about to drive if it was anything but very slushy snow. Only ran in very wet snow on the Paulson summit between Christina Lake and Castlegar.

This is most likely the reason why the route is not suggested on RVTW.

This is the writeup I found about travel restrictions: "All recreational vehicles and buses are permitted on the Icefields Parkway. Restrictions apply on others: All other vehicles, including commercial vehicles and U-Hauls, must weigh less than 4550 kg (10,031 lbs) fully loaded." I think RVTW defers to the truck restrictions as it's routing engine is based on trucking database as far as I understand.
