Jimbow, if you do end up running 416 there's a town named Merrickville south of Ottawa that warrants a stop. Can't remember the restaurant we ate at, but great food and atmosphere. They also have a set of old manual locks and a pivot bridge over the Rideau river that is quite interesting to watch. Just FYI.

Likely the Yellow Canoe Cafe. The daughter of the couple that started it recently took over, but it's still the same great place.

We did a trip last Summer through Maine up to Nova Scotia and then back down through Vermont. We took the Southern route home to Illinois just because it looked to be less urban and there were more campgrounds.

I'm looking at the map and thinking Canada would be slightly shorter. We have passports so that's not a problem. What are the other issues and is it worth it to hug the north side of the great lakes or just stay in the US with the truck and TT?

If you enjoy happy hour then make sure you are within the customs limits when crossing the borders. We are making the same trip in the fall from Detroit and will avoid the crossings. The border crossings are either no pain or all pain it is just the luck of the draw. You could spend several hours on both sides.

Yes. Our trip was pre 911 so that's another consideration I guess.

Looking at the idea that you are doing over 2000 miles in 5 days you won't have time to linger anywhere for more than an extra night. That would have me thinking stay in the US and take the fastest with a stop somewhere like the NY Finger Lakes, Niagara Falls, or several other places you would be convenient to in NY, MA, NH or ME south of Bar Harbor. You will be going past a ton of good places that are worth a layover to look around but you won't have time to do that. Might as well pick somewhere farther out where you can use the break and are not as likely to come back to.

I know. I worked in Mexico while living in the US. I crossed twice a day. We measured the line by light poles. People new to the system always looked confused when they would hear is say, man it was horrible we were backed up fourteen lights.
Last month we took a row boat across. Much different feel.

Jimbow,
My DW is from Maine. We met (1967) when i was stationed (AF) at a small radar sight 30 miles north of Bangor. We traveled many, many time from Detroit into Windsor and up the QEW to Quebec and down into ME through Jackman and down to Moose head Lake and down to Doverfoxcroft. The coast and BH is about 90 miles south of Dover and we have also made that trip many, many times.
We were on the coast of ME for 27 days last summer. We actually stayed in a CG far enough from BH so it was very, very pleasant. There was a ferry at the small (10 sights on the ocean) CG that went to BH (40 minute boat ride) twice a day. That is by far the best way to see BH. The dropped us off at the dock and we could walk most anywhere. You can also use the buses or even drive if need be. It's an awfully busy place and a bit of a tourist trap.
If you are interested in more info PM me.
