Head towards Birmingham. No need to go near Atlanta. The downside is that driving in Alabama has to be a lot like NASCAR. The last time I went through there on I65 was nuts.
I would go US-331 to I-65 (or go a little west further south to get on 65 sooner) to I-459 to I-59 to I-24 into Chattanooga. I just did a similar route a little farther west from Navarre.

When we were down there someone suggested that route north. 331 is a nice road, not much traffic and we made great time. We veered west on 55 and got on I65 at Georgiana as we wanted to get to the 4 lane. If you want to avoid I65 I agree 331 would probably be a good choice up to Montgomery.
