If your concerned about grades: in unfamiliar areas, refer to Mountain Directory
http://www.mountaindirectory.com/ There is a west and east coast version. Both available in paper back or downloadable. Listing paved roads with 4% or steeper grades, and details for both directions. Approx.: $25 for both. Been using them for 15 years.

Going thru the mountains on I-40 west of Asheville is pretty easy. It’s kind of curvy, but not a problem. Going into Asheville there is a decent but not a real steep grade. Been thru there many times, most recently about 5 hrs ago. There is some construction around mile marker 7 just inside North Carolina. It was backed up about 3 miles east bound today. Not that familiar with I-40 east of Asheville. There is a climb there. I think it is west bound.

Can’t help you there. Never been on 64 east of Lexington.

Interstate East of Lexington isn't bad. (Many many moons ago I help build a section of that Interstate in Kentucky!) Once you get East of Charleston, there is a long uphill grade crossing over the mountains. But all in all, not bad at all.

If you have the time, there is a lot to see and explore along that route.

Not bad at all. When I was stationed in Norfolk and went home to visit, I used I-64 all the time. My grandparents lived in Morehead, Ky, 10 miles off of I-64 in eastern Ky.
The Blue Ridge Mountains are nothing like the ones out west. I think they are under 7,000 feet.

When we go to Martinsville, VA we take 77 down to 64 & over to Roanoke. Not really bad at all. I think there is one longer grade but it's not steep at all.

I'd suggest I-40 to I-81 to I-64...takes you right into Richmond!

And not a bad drive! A couple of long grades, at 5-7%, but easily doable!

Good Luck!
