Best Route from Galveston Beach to North of Houston on I-45

We have a 45-ft Class A and are flat towing a Jeep. We will leave Jamaica Beach (by Galveston Beach) on a Saturday. We want to avoid Houston traffic.

I was looking at TX-6 around Houston, FM1960, and then connecting with I-45. The trip time-wise is a lot longer than my other option which is I-45 to I-610 and then back on I-45. But I am afraid of the traffic on the interstates in Houston proper even on a weekend.

What does everyone recommend?

Thanks

NO.

TX 6 and FM1960 is a LOT of stop and go.

Particularly on Saturday, either go right through on I 45 or I45 and east loop 610 and back to I45.

Look at one of your travel apps to make sure to avoid any weekend construction.

JD I live near and on Sat mid morn would not be afraid of 45 to 610 back to 45 N. I have went through the center of Houston wk end and not bad.

Take Hwy 6 and 1960, if you want about 200 traffic lights (well maybe only 100) and horrible weekend traffic. On a weekend, I'd just take I45 straight through town. ^10 loop has major construction on the west side and weekend traffic is bad.

If you don't mind the tolls, you could take Beltway 8 (Sam Houston Tollway) to the west. It is pretty pricey with 5 axles and I believe there is an extra fee for toll by mail.

On a Saturday I would probably just take I-45 all the way, even though I hate Houston traffic.
Thanks,

45 to Beltway 8. Go east on 8 past Pasadena and the ship channel, pass I-10, then continue to 45N.

Better to leave at midnight to go 45 straight thru downtown.

Daytime Houston freeway traffic is insane, no way to avoid it.

Hwy 6 to 1960 is suicide. You’ll either get killed or you will cut your wrists, because it will take forever to reach 45 N. Traffic on a Saturday will be real heavy. Not to mention more red lights than the law allows. Seriously, don’t go this way.

Thanks to ALL

I really appreciate the replies. I think I am going to do either I-45 straight through or I-45 to the I-610 loop around the east side. Per my driving app (CoPilot) and Google it saves 2 hours of drive time for the total trip.

Thanks to all.

Before you take off, I would check TXDOT for road closures.
https://www.txdot.gov/inside-txdot/s...h_section=main

There are lots of closures in the Houston area due to construction. For instance, I-10 is closed this weekend west of downtown.

Taking 610 loop to the east can be a dice toss even on a weekend. A wreck can shut you down for hours. There is lots of truck traffic on the east side 610 loop. Expect traffic on the NE corner of the loop. Once you are on I-45, headed north from the loop, the traffic can get pretty heavy through certain areas. Seems all the local idiots want to run 15 mph over the posted speed limit. Also, don't honk at anyone as that area is not the best area and they are as likely as not to shoot back. Sounds terrible, but it is true. Road rage shootings in Houston are insane this year.

The morning you leave, be sure and check Houston Transtar for road closure and traffic.

I agree 6 to 1960 might be the hardest way to do what you're trying to do.

Depending on timing an traffic 8, 610, or 45 would be best and simplest.

Thanks for the GREAT Help

We made it through Houston today (Saturday) going north from Galveston. We took I-45 to I-610. Traffic was solid complete with some nutty drivers and near accidents in front of us but we made it.

I am so glad that I did not take TX-6. on the route that we took, I never once felt that I would get killed not did I want to cut my wrists. Thanks to SergioP for his input as that really swayed me to bite the bullet and hit Houston head on.

Thanks to all.

Glad you made it ok, as a general rule downtown Houston inside I-610 is a ghost town on the weekends.

Formerly lived in Galveston County and was just down there yesterday. Just head straight thru on I45 on a Saturday or Sunday. No need to bypass downtown.
