Best Route From Moab to Bryce Canyon NP
Recently I was asking for advice on the best route from Moab to Bryce Canyon. Most responders gave good advice to a point. They said go north on Rt. 191 to I-70 west to Rt. 24 South to Torrey, Utah. Good advice to this point and the road is very scenic and easy to travel. From this point in Torrey everyone said go south on Rt. 12 over the “Hog Back”, through Escalante to Bryce. Horrible advice. This road goes up to 9100 feet with a 22 mile up and down 8-9% grade. Then the Hog Back is a narrow 2-lane road with a 2000-foot drop off on each side, with no shoulder, or guardrails. After the Hog Back you start a 14% down grade for 12 miles on twisty switchbacks. We drove this portion of scenic Rt. 12 to the Hog Back, in the toad and were very glad we were not in the Motorhome. Do not do this with an RV. Instead enjoy a beautiful valley drive, with no mountains, on Rt. 24 west from Torrey. Follow 24 to Rt. 62 south and then on to Rt. 89 south to Bryce.
