Best route, Ketchum to Salmon, ID

Looks like 3 options!
Hwy 75 towards Stanley
Trail Creek Road to Hwy 93
Head south to Hwy 20 to Arco making a big loop to Hwy 28 towards Salmon
Looking to minimize big long upgrades! Thanks

Whatever you do don't take Trail Creek Road with your big rig. OK for a car or truck but not a big rig as good portion of it is not paved and is on a cliff with no guard rails. I've never been on Hwy 75 to Stanley so I can't comment on that route except to say that the section of that route from Stanley to Salmon is quite good. Been on the Hwy 20 route through Arco several times and it is a good road all the way to Salmon.

I have done Arco to Salmon via 93 and Salmon to Sage Junction via 28 with my 25ft travel trailer. The 93 route is very skinny and twisty with some 20mph turns following the river with rock outcrops right near the road. While very pretty drive I do prefer the 28 route for its simplicity.

I bet given the slower speeds you'd need to travel going 93 the entire way, the 28 route would be very close in overall time.

We've done two of the routes with our 40' motorhome pulling the Jeep.

Preferred: 177 miles - 75/93 - an absolutely beautiful drive - Sawtooth Nat'l Rec Area has some awesome campgrounds and oh, the scenery! From Stanley you'll be driving along the Salmon River with many places to pull over and enjoy. Out of Ketchum you'll have Galena Pass - 8700' EL You'll have approx a 5-mile climb and another 5-mile descent at 6% - not a biggie. You'll have no issues with your motorhome.

2nd choice and definitely not as scenic - desert-like - Hwy 75/26 to Arco then 33/22/28 - 234 miles

Thanks for the feedback, went up Hwy 75 to the 93! Our destination for the day was Missoula, and now in Polson, MT. We’ll be here for 5 days and will head to Coeur d’Alene! So a new question is, best route from Polson to Coeur d’Alene as I’m seeing multiple routes as well….!?
Thanks again!

How did you like the 75/93 route to Salmon?

Our favorite: 220 very scenic miles along river and lake; good road

Polson 28 to Plains
200 to Sandpoint, ID
95 to Coeur d' Alene

Very nice scenic route!
As for Polson to Coeur d’Alene, what’s the difference if we went
28 to Plains
200 to 135 to I-90 to Coeur d’Alene?

That would work.
