Best Route through Wyoming
Putting together our 2023 travel plans and part of it will be spending a month in West Yellowstone. The approach from the north is no problem, but I'd like to exit to the south.
One route would be taking highway 26/287 southeast and coming out at Rawlings, the other would be taking 20/I-15 to the southwest into Utah. I've never been over either route and wondering which might be best and least stressful with our 35' Journey towing our Jeep Wrangler Unlimited?

We’ve taken both routes with toad (class a Tiffin Breeze and class c Winnebago View) … given the opportunity to choose, I’d go the 26/287 route. Nice scenery, lighter traffic, reasonable terrain.
Have a great trip.

We have done both and they are no problems but I agree with SeeThe USA as 26/287 being a nicer ride.

I'm a Wyoming native now living in Colorado. When I leave out of Yellowstone coming home I often take US287 all the way to I80 in Rawlins. That's road I would take over going into Idaho.

I agree - 287 would be our choice over an interstate.
It also depends where you're going from there.

I found 287 to be a good route. Not a lot of services but a lot of antelope at times

In playing with the trip wizard I noticed flaming gorge and I'm thinking we might want to take this in. Looks like a more direct route there might be hyw 191. Any experience with that highway?

US191 from Yellowstone to Vernal is a good road and VERY scenic. If you are thinking of taking in Flaming Gorge then US191 is a good choice.
Of course do your research before hand to be aware of construction, etc.

Agreed on 191. Note that you'll have a long downhill into Vernal. Don't keep your foot on the brake pedal! Get into lower gear at the top.

I'll throw this out there....
If on 26/287 some points of interest include Sacajawea's grave near Fort Washakie. That was a neat discovery for us when we went that way.
In Landers (stay at Sleeping Bear RV & CG) and visit the Eagle Foundry - check ahead for tour dates/times - very personal and low volume tour, and very interesting.
Sinks Canyon SP near Landers is a neat find too.
Finally - a day trip over to South Pass is really nice, and somewhat educational too.
If taking 28/287 you can always cut back West on I-80 to drop down into flaming Gorge,Vernal )with a side trip to Dinosaur) and take 191 all the way to Moab.
Of course taking 191 (Wind River Range) is a treat too going down through Pinedale and Boulder.
Finally - remember to download and use the Gypsy Guide app for Yellowstone and Moab/Canyonlands.
have fun, safe travels.

In progress of planning a route from Waco, Texas to West Yellowstone as we have jobs in Yellowstone for 2023 summer. So, I am interested in some of the information from the group. Watching with interest.
