Best route to Bellevue, IL (Scott AFB) from the west.

We will be traveling eastbound on I-44, planning a stop at Scott AFB in Bellevue, IL. What would be the best route without traveling through the St. Louis metro area? Iím thinking SR-141 to I-55, then I-255 to cross the river. A bit further, (13 Miles?) but avoiding the St. Louis traffic as much as possible.

You can also go straight through downtown on 44 to 64, but this route is longer but safer.

I am from this area and I was just through there a year ago after spending a week at the Route 66 KOA. I-64 on the Illinois side has several rough spots after you connect to it from I- 255. It is the easiest way to Scott AFB coming from the west. Once you get past Collinsville the road is good.
