Best way to bypass Houston and San Antonio while taking I-10 West?

My wife and I are planning a trip from Florida to Arizona with our travel trailer for February/March. We will be taking I-10. We’ve done this route before, but focused on southern New Mexico to explore. This time is southern and western Arizona. On previous trips we stayed on I-10 through Houston and San Antonio and would prefer to bypass I-10 through these two cities. What are the best ways to do this?

Depends on how adventitious you are and how much time you have. This is one of the ways we have gone.

Sam Houston express way (toll) south around houston, and 1604 (as I recall) north around San Antonio. Both very good roads. One short section of 1604 is still two lane.

Nope--wouldn't by-pass either one unless you really want to see something in particular in south Texas, eg, like the hill country north of SA or down the Texas gulf coast. Other than during rush hour, taking I10 straight thru either Houston or SA is not a big deal. Otherwise, there are few direct routes that "by-pass" these two cities--IMHO.

Do you need a Houston toll road transponder for this?
Thanks

Enjoyed your Alaska reports last summer, we’re headed there this spring. Hope you survived the hurricane without loss - other than the evacuation.

Really not a direct way to bypass Houston, now that 10 is done (5-6 years ago) traffic does move along pretty well. We moved from Houston to North TX 5 years ago so I haven’t had the opportunity to drive through San Antonio since then but I used to exit I-10 in Seguin on TX-46 taking it through New Braunfels rejoining I-10 in Boerne to bypass San Antonio. Traffic will be heavy in New Braunfels and Boerne especially on weekends so it may not be worth the detour. You will want avoid Austin, which rules out US-290.

My wife and I enjoyed St Clair Winery in Deming, NM, they’ll let you spend the night in their parking lot you may want to stop on your way to AZ.

We took Rt. 8 around Houston. As mentioned above, the time and day of the week determine how congested the traffic will be. We went thru on a Monday at 11 a.m.. No problem.

Hey, Jerry! Thank you for following along on our Alaska trip. I hope I shared some info that will be useful to you on your trip. You’re going to love the trip!! We didn’t have much damage from the hurricane other than a bit of fence repair. Thanks.

Take a different highway?

There really aren’t any other options. If you avoid rush hour you should be fine.

If you need a stop mid way through Texas try Buckhorn in Kerrville. Very nice RV resort with pull through spots.

The best way to avoid Houston and San Antonio is to take I-20, If you use Google Maps and route from Tallahassee FL, to El Paso TX you will see that taking US 49 north west across Mississippi from I-10 to I-20 only adds 15 miles to your trip, vs taking I-10 straight through. I-20 will only skirt the south side of the DFW metroplex vs I-10 going through the center of Baton Rouge (bottle neck traffic issue), Houston and San Antonio.
