Big Bend

Has anyone traveled from Presidio to Big Bend on FM 170 with a motorhome and towed? Understand there is a real incline on this road?

Google earth shows one VERY short incline / decline ... I have driven it in my toad many years ago ... I don't remember that ... what I remember is crossing lots of "sand draws" with posts showing high the water might be if there was local flooding ...

Once inside the park, there is a climb to get to the "garden spot" of the park ...

Lots of nice drives and hikes in this park

170 is most likely the best scenic route in the state of Texas. Don't be afraid to stop at the scenic overlooks. They are spectacular and there is plenty of room to pull over. One of the pullovers in Big Bend Ranch SP is at "Closed Canyon". It's a easy 1/4 mi hike to a genuine slot canyon. Very impressive. Also Maveric Ranch RV park in Lajitas is a great place to stay. I recommend dinner at the Starlight Theatre in Terlingua. Enjoy

Are there any good RV parks inside Big Bend?

The only RV 'Park' inside Big Bend is Rio Grande Village RV, run by a concessioner. It offers full hookups and the sites are in a row on pavement.

When we've gone to Big Bend we've stayed in Rio Grande Village 'campground' which is next door to the RV Park. The campground doesn't have hookups but the large sites are randomly placed amongst trees and it's very pleasant. There is a dump station.

We've also used the Cottonwood campground which is lovely but generators are not allowed. We have solar.

There's also another campground in the park at Chisos Basin which requires a clumb up a steep hill to get to it. There is a length restriction (I don't recall exactly but it's around 20' I believe). It's higher elevation so it's much cooler.

170 is a terrific road for sight seeing. It is squiggly, and goes over the hills a couple of times, but there is room for an RV. It will (should?) be a slow trip. There are several places where the road goes through washes. The dip into the wash can be significant if you are going too fast.
