CA Hwy 49 heading North from Mariposa to Mocassin
We are visiting Kings Canyon and Sequoia later this month and then heading North to Yosemite. From what I can tell, we can’t take Hwy 140 to Big Oak Flat Road because of the Yosemite Valley tunnel (we are 12’ 6”). Does anyone have firsthand experience with Hwy 49 heading North from Mariposa to Hwy 120? I don’t believe tunnels are an issue, but are the curves and switchbacks do-able for a 40’ Class A towing a Jeep? Also, any insight on major elevation changes to be prepared for? I have looked online and at my motor carriers road atlas but neither makes any mention of any sort of restrictions.
Thanks in advance if you can shed any light…

I've take the 120 from Groveland to the 49 to Mariposa..
Beautiful scenic ride but a little white knuckles.... Definitely possible, take your time
Some switchbacks and what seemed like forever very steep cliffs on either side ...
There is some climbs and descents and one point where you can see the road where you just came through and think, "Holy Cow, we were just came down that way"
The road is a sports car drivers dream
As the driver I really wasn't able to take advantage of the beautiful views...like I'd have liked to
I'm 33' class A with a GMC Canyon Toad...

Thanks, Vato! Much appreciated! Guess I’m gonna be ruining some sports car driver’s day in a couple of weeks… cuz I’m sure gonna be going slower than he will!

I wouldn’t take that stretch of Hwy 49. Switchbacks all the way and very steep at times

White Knuckles
Thanks for your reply, Tractman… I probably should’ve checked the forum yesterday before we took off.
Well.. you know the old saying about fools rushing in… We drove CA Hwy 49 N from Mariposa to Moccasin yesterday in our Y2K Diesel Bounder 39z (39’6”) towing our Jeep Liberty. It was one of the most memorable white knuckles I’ve ever experienced. I was not the driver, DH was. To put it in perspective, he used to drive hazmat tankers. After we reached our destination in Groveland, he told me he was really glad we would be here for a week because he thinks it’s going to take that long for him to recover. Tractman is correct: no sooner are you around one curve when you’re faced with another. And the elevation changes are another real treat. Needless to say, we won’t be going back that way!! And now that I’ve done it: if you’re reading this and considering taking this route in a larger rig, I would advise against it unless you’ve got the skills, experience and calm nerves to handle it.

To aide in your recovery, stop in the Iron Door Saloon and have a beverage....

I won't say you can't, but that is a road I would take when I wanted a workout on a Motorcycle. Its tight, many turns and switchbacks, great on a bike not so much fun in a MH. DR
