California Rest Areas
Traveling form Portland to Phoenix soon, As I remember from last year several rest areas on I-10 were closed.. Has anyone noticed that this year. I really don't need the Facilities, but the pull-in is nice for me and the pups.
Thanks

I can't speak to the 10, but I have tried to review as many of the rest areas on the 5 between LA and Portland as I have been in recently in RV Parky.

If I am using a rest area off of the Interstate, I am there WAY before the truckers start to pull off for the night.
I am a 6-7 hour per day driver or around 300 miles per day. Depending on how I feel I usually get on the road between 8-9 am. And then I am back off the road by 3 or 4 pm, 5 pm at the latest.
That gives me time to relax have a beer or some wine, do email, watch a little TV and hit the sack.

On the 5 the only locations we've seen packed have been up neat the 580 going into the Bay Area. The rest of the locations are busy, sure, but not so packed we can't find a space.

Might depend on the day of the week and the time of day. I've tried stopping at some rest areas on I-5 north of Sacramento and couldn't get a spot for a lunch break - a couple days later lots of space. Just a hit or miss and now I most often use a Walmart parking area for lunch breaks.

Those truckers probably need the sleep more than you. Other than truck stops where else can they stop for rest?

There's no lack of truck stops on the 5 between LA and Sacramento.
You have:
Castaic
Grapevine
Stockdale Hwy
Buttonwillow
Lost Hills
Kettleman
Harris Ranch
..etc etc etc

I was on I-10 between Beaumont, CA to Phoenix about three weeks ago (I usually drive that route two or three times a year now; I used to quite more frequently when I was still working Renaissance Festivals). Whitewater, west of Palm Springs, was closed. Cactus City, near the top of the hill going east of Indio, was open after having been closed for a two or three years. I didn't stop at Wiley's Wells, west of Blight (aka Blythe), but I didn't see any signs saying it was closed (I rarely stop there anymore since I retired and don't have to drive all night to get back to a job).
I always hit the Loves in Quartzsite, AZ when I pass through to get go-juice (prices keep going up as one goes west and they jump when one crosses the AZ/CA border) and make a pit stop. It's frequently busy, especially this time of year, but it's always open.
There are rest areas between Quartzsite and Phoenix and they have been open the last two or three years (they had been closed for a while after the start of the 2008 recession).

I Agree
Being a X-Trucker,
Yea we need our sleep, Truck stops are always nosier than a Rest stop (most of the time). My sleeper was just under the refer for the trailer. I got used to it. Of course I can sleep in the MH 50 feet away from the train tracks @ my brothers place with trains running more and more w/oil from the Dakota's.
I wish those that are light sleeper's,a way that they can find to sleep. Nothing worse than being so sleepie and not be able to get some sleep.
If I found the last parking spot Rest-area/Truck stop I would give it to a trucker every time. I can use the bathroom going down the HWY just as well as stopping anytime, thats what they have the bathroom Curtains for...;}
