Carlsbad Caverns Route 285

Help!! This spring we are planning a trip to Carlsbad Caverns and I have heard many horror stories about significant pot holes and rock throwing trucks on route 285. We would be coming from I40 heading south, is route 285 as bad as I have heard and if so is there any good options. Appreciate any input. I will be traveling in a 37ft DP with a Jeep in tow. Thanks

Heading south from I-40 no problems on 285. If one was going north from Pecos, Tx to Carlsbad the road is a disaster and with many wrecks.
