Cedar Rapids, IA to Toledo, OH - Avoid Chicago?
In late August we'll be traveling from Cedar Rapids to Toledo, OH. Our mapping software is routing us on I 80 to connect to I94 south of Gary. Was wondering if there is a better route, perhaps south to Indy?

The most direct route from Cedar Rapids to Toledo is I80 all the way. Anything else will take your well out of the way. As long as you avoid rush hours and don’t exit the freeway you should do fine. You could go to Indy but it would add considerable time and distance.

Thanks, we'll do that. I was worried about the traffic being so bad around Gary that it might be worth considering going a bit out of the way.

I-80south of Chicago is not that terrible, you are well south of downtown. I have driven it several times in the rig. Even if you hit traffic, take your time, follow the truckers and you will be fine. It may slow you down by a half hour but Indy will take you hours out of the way.

if you time it to hit the portion of I-80 between I-355 and I-65 between say, 10am and 2pm, barring an accident or other similar issue you should miss the bulk of the traffic. that or plan to hit it in the wee wee hours of the morning.

Rt 80 does run with i94 for a few miles in Gary just make sure you get off exit 16 to the Indiana toll road which is also rt 80. If you pass the toll road I 80/94 continues as i94.

I have set up my mapping software to avoid tolls, so here is the routing it is recommending:
I-80 east to I-57 north to US-6 (South Holland - 159th St) east to I-94 east to US 49 to US-30. We're actually headed toward Bowling Green just south of Toledo.
I suspect I-294 is a toll road.

duh...BG OHIO, not KY. that route will avoid tolls although it’s just a single toll booth where I-294 meets I-80. IMO the cost of a singke tow is worth the 39-45 min detour you have planned.
