Cherokee, NC - Garmin Basecamp Hwy 441 Issue

Heading over to the KOA in Cherokee, NC in a few days and am having a Garmin Basecamp issue with my route. I'm taking 74 west from I-40 to 441, right on 19, and then I want to turn left onto 441 thru Cherokee. Basecamp will not route me onto 441 thru Cherokee regardless of the number of shaping points I put on 441. It will take roads on either side of 441 and take me to the shaping point, but then routes me back off 441. I have turned off all avoidances and everything in the RV profile.

Anybody got any suggestions for me to try? I can get there following hand written notes, but my co-pilot is not very helpful at navigating and looking for signs so I like to have my GPS direct me. Once I get the map in Basecamp, I download it to my GPS (Garmin RV760). This is not a RV760 issue as I can't even get the route created in Basecamp. For what it is worth, the directions from the KOA itself say take 441 thru downtown Cherokee.

Can’t help you with the Garmin but we stayed there last fall. When you make that left onto 441 in Cherokee you turn right at the second traffic light (~2miles) cross the bridge and then the first left.
Just a heads up about that KOA, across the river from the KOA one of the residences there had several dogs kept outside that barked all night every night for the two days we stayed. Second night I had KOA move me to a site closer to the road. Still heard the dogs outside but not inside.

Change it to car profile and see if that works. Be sure to check out the route via Google Earth to make sure there are no obstructions.

For an obstruction, a proximity is used, not an absolute marker. I've had several refusals to route over the years; they turned out to be obstructions on roads very close to the desired route. For example, the US highway has adequate clearance but the street a block over does not and sometimes Basecamp will refuse to route on that US highway.

I just stepped through town with Google Earth and didn't see anything other than tourists. Perhaps one of the bridges across the creek is causing the problem.

Thanks for the response johnhicks. I have changed my route to be customized and turned off all avoidances and everything. Still doesn't work. Changed from RV to car and it still goes the same way. Added to avoid roundabouts (there is one in the calculated route) and recalculated and it goes up 441 thru Cherokee just like I want it to and how the KOA says to go. Changed it back to RV and it no longer goes up 441. Changed it to truck and it does the same thing as RV.

I also updated the software and maps on Basecamp and the RV760. No change.

Mine goes up the side road with RV selected, Driving (car) goes up US-441 as expected. Avoid Roundabouts is not checked in either profile.

It's seeing something as an obstruction or avoidance (weight etc) near enough to US-441 to think it needs to avoid it. Or it could be trying to avoid US-441 because of the tight curves and grades up at Newfound Gap when RV is selected.

I traveled the route yesterday. The only thing I saw that could possibly cause basecamp not to take 441 right in Cherokee was about 100 yards of the road shut down to 1 lane only. I’m going to ask the campground folks if they know why this is happening.

Following. We're going to this KOA next month. I use a Garmin 770 but I let it do the plotting, not BaseCamp.

I talked to the ladies in the office about the gps routing and they had no clue. All I can tell you is that we came into Cherokee on 441 to Big Cove Connector and had no problems in our 35’ class A w/toad.

Over the years Garmin has updated maps a couple of times when I notified them of errors; you might want to report that there's no obstacle or load limit in US-441 in that area once you've confirmed it. Perhaps there was in years past.

I may give them a call and ask them about it. If there is a problem, maybe than get it corrected. If not, then it is what it is.

One correction I need to make on a previous post, the one lane section that I said was on 441 is not on 441. It is on the road that leads directly to the campground.
