Cincinnati to South Dakota to Yellowstone
Hello
Looking for info on my upcoming trip in June. Here is my current trip plan, all of my camp sites have been booked for South Dakota and Yellowstone.
6/1/2019 - leave Cincinnati to Rock Island, Ill KOA - 410 miles
6/2/2019 - Leave rock island KOA to Sioux City KOA - 439 miles
6/3/2019- leave Sioux City to Rapid City KOA - 341 miles
6/4/2019 - South Dakota
6/5/2019 - South Dakota
6/6/2019 - South Dakota
6/7/2019 - South Dakota
6/8/2019 - Leave Rapid City KOA to West Yellowstone, MT KOA - 532 Miles
6/9/2019 - Yellowstone/ Grand Tetons
6/10/2019 - Yellowstone/ Grand Tetons
6/11/2019 - Yellowstone/ Grand Tetons
6/12/2019 - Leave Yellowstone to Spearfish KOA - 479 Miles
6/13/2019 - Leave Spearfish to Sioux City KOA - 467 Miles
6/14/2019 - Leave Sioux City to Rock Island KOA - 401 Miles
6/15/2019 - Leave Rock Island to Home - 411 Miles
I am traveling with my wife & kids and my parents are following. I have been to SD twice by myself so I am reasonably good with the route there.
My Concern is leaving SD to West Yellowstone, MT it looks like my trip planner is taking me though the park. Is this a good Idea, Looking at the map it adds miles but 90 takes me north around the park. Should I go the way its planed or up and around.
I have the miles of each day down so we can have a comfortable trip traveling with my parents and no rush pressure to get there. This should all be daylight driving.
This leg of the trip is the largest as far as miles and it looks like it could be the most challenging. I would prefer to stick to interstates, Don't want to put myself on narrow two lane roads pulling my 5th wheel.
Anyone with insight or has made this trip would be great.
Thanks
Angelo

I have a suggestion. While you are out that way visit the badlands. Toadstool park in Nebraska is not far out of your way. I have been told it is really awesome. Like being on another planet. I am stopping there myself on our trip in June over Fathers day week.

We are going to Idaho then stopping at the Tetons on my way home. Then we are cutting through the middle of Wyoming. Stopping at Thermopolis Wy. They have mineral hot springs. Then on to Toadstool park.
I see Sioux City is on your route. I just live 45 miles south of there. I didn't know they had a KOA there.

Does seem ambitious. We were in Yellowstone for almost a week and felt we never saw it all. This was in Sept. traffic was lower than usual but still...well, traffic. There’s only two lane roads in YS and IIRC there’s three loops that make up the entire park. There’s no hurrying in the park. People stop on the road to see the animals and believe me, the animals own the park. If they’re on the road or beside the road, you’ll be stopping, either because of them or the animal watchers.
We stayed at the West YS KOA when we were there. 6 miles outside of town. Nice place. Went to YS everyday using our Seniors National Parks Pass. Worth looking in to and getting. Saves you $$ at the parks overall if you visit very many. I think they’re $80 now and can be picked up at any NP or National Historic Site.
When we left, we went straight through the park heading East to Cody. Quite an elevation change from YS to Cody but we did go straight through the park. We have a 40ft MH with a Jeep toad and it wasn’t a problem. Just went slower. Up, down, and curves.
Make sure your towing connections and brakes are in good working order out in that area. Elevation changes galore. Cody is 6,000ft and YS is 8,000ft average.
BTW, in Cody there is a museum in town that’s well worth the visit. It’s several museums combined. Wild Bill’s museum, gun museum, Native American museum. Took us two days to go through it all. Also, on the edge of town is a small Western town made up from original 1800 buildings they brought in. Bullet holes in the salon and everything. This is also well worth the stop/visit. Lots of historical significance in the West.
There’s so much out there to see, it takes a little time. We’ll be heading back out there before long. Just beautiful and hard to describe. Guess that’s why so many people go West (from my position anyway).
Hope this helps and Safe travels in your ventures.

That 532 mile day is going to be a long one. Anything over 300 ends up being a longer day than you would think.
Enjoy the journey...sounds like a great trip! It's a good day to be planning summer trips in Cincinnati (bitter cold with snow on the ground).

I'd cut some time in South Dakota and add to Yellowstone. Don't try to do both Yellowstone and Grand Teton from one base. Too much slow driving and you won't have time to really explore Grand Teton which is completely different in looks and things to do than Yellowstone. You need to stay in the Teton park. Plan to take a gentle float trip in the park on the Snake River. You just might see a moose in the water with you. We did! The hiking is better in the Tetons we think. There are short ones to beautiful little lakes.
If you could add Cody for a night or two and then leave Cody early morning, the drive through the park would be great. We've done it. The tourists wouldn't be moving around yet but the animals will. Very nice. Cody has a rodeo and as stated above, the museum is great.
From Buffalo we took Hwy 16 to Worland then north to Greybull and west to Cody.

We did our first extended trip to the Black hills and Yellowstone during the last two weeks of September. We stayed at the KOA West Entrance (there are two) in West Yellowstone. A few things we learned:
1. parking lots for scenic overlooks were crowed during off-season. I can't imagine what summer traffic will be like. I can imagine it but don't want to experience it.
2. If there is wildlife visible from the road there will be a traffic jam in both directions. One day we were stopped/stop-go for an hour with no explanation. We were also stopped for a one lane construction zone for another hour. So..Be flexible with your time.
3. The West Yellowstone entrance is VERY busy during the summer as most guests approach from the west. I was told that entrance traffic backs up for miles, right through the town of West Yellowstone.
4. Don't forget a camera with a good zoom lens. I did and my phone couldn't do justice to the elk and bison sightings on day one. Day two they were not around.
5. Download the Yellowstone App. Among other things it has a geyser eruption estimate for 6 of the park geysers. Old Faithful is not impressive, it just faithfully erupts on the most predictable schedule.
6. Lastly, we drove through Yellowstone from Cody to West Yellowstone. It wasn't as challenging as the Big Horn Mountains but on the way home we took the 90 mile detour up 191 to I90/Boseman. The transit time was nearly the same and much more relaxing. The northbound drive is scenic and mostly flat.

It will be quicker to go I90 than to go through the Bighorns and Yellowstone. The diving point is Sheridan, WY. To go from Sheridan to West Yellow via I-90/191 it is 360 miles and about 4 hours. To go from Sheridan to West Yellowston via hwy 14 it is only 281 miles, but will take about 8-10 hours, maybe more depending on the traffic in the park.

If you do 360 miles in 4 hours that’s an average of 90 mph. Don’t want to be around you! 6 hours maybe?

Oops, typo.
I had originally typed :The northern route is 4 hours quicker even though it's farther.
When I edited it to spell it out in more detail I botched the editing job.
My apologies for the confusion.
It's about 3-4 hours quicker to take I-90/191 than to take 14 across due to the low speeds over the Bighorns and then traffic jams inside the park. Plus traffic in Cody can be brutal mid day during the peak season.

I would stop in Cody Wy before going to West Yellowstone. KOA in Cody is really nice.
