We live in the western burbs of Chicago, 35 miles from the lakefront. That’s about as close as you would ever want to get to the inner metropolitan area.
Best steer well clear.

There is a bypass for Shrevport, I-220 is a better road and only adds a few miles. And it let’s you keep your fillings in your teeth!

Definitely Atlanta and Birmingham. We went thru B’ham instead of AtlNta last year but it was equally crowded and under construction! Chicago is a place we willNEVER go through with a motorhome!

Not only the most dangerous city, but also freeway road condition is worse than Chicago.

Had a friend that showed me how to get through Atlanta. There were 3 of us pulling campers and he was in an old class a. we were going to the Atlanta NASCAR race last year. We hit the POV lane and went straight thru town during a Friday rush hr. Only one little slow up for a couple mins and kept going. Tried it again latter during the summer going to FL and it worked just fine. Coming back from S to N is a little tricky but worked just as good.

DFW for sure
DFW in our experience is worst. Avoid I-30 thru by taking I-20 on south side of town. Jump back up to I30 on east side of Dallas at Terrell, TX to Greenville, TX. Connecting highway is 2-lane in places, but not bad at all, and one exit from Buccee’s.

Several cities and interstates can be a problem
We have driven through El Paso several times and now try our best to avoid it. Lane markings are faded and combined with winding road in places it's difficult to keep a large vehicle where it is supposed to be. Driving through Chicago is a challenge and even driving around Chicago is a challenge. Atlanta area traffic and narrow downtown lanes are hard to maneuver around and heavy traffic continues 18 hours a day. Anywhere in Indiana is a problem due to poor roads. Route 95 south of Boston is a problem due to very heavy traffic and tolls. We drive through Pennsylvania to avoid it. Last, anywhere where sudden strong wind can appear can be a major issue, such as the canyons in south California. Lots of cities have traffic issues but most are easy to drive through with a little patience. Keep in mind that many drivers don't like to follow motorhomes anymore than they like to follow big rig trucks.

My wife and I made a deal. I will never ask to go west of the Mississippi River and she.will not ask to go north of the Mason Dixon Line. We didn’t lose anything the last we were in those places and see no reason to go back.
