When traveling across the country, what cities do you find the most challenging to pass through? And what routes do you use to avoid them?

Dallas/FtWorth, Houston, NewOrleans, Atlanta, LosAngeles,SanFrancisco, Portland, Seattle. Is that enough of a start?

I will add any city during acwird day rush hour. Atlanta is one I try to avoid. Stop and go traffic on a summer Sunday afternoon at 3:00pm.

Most cities at rush hours. There is a bypass around Nashville, a southern route around Memphis, Oklahoma and Amarillo are great to skip thru only at off rush hours due to road construction, Los Angeles is another to try to avoid at rush hour, west of Phoenix bypass if you're going south on I-10. We try to skip El Paso by going over the mountains instead just north. Bypass Dallas by going on the southern loop. Houston is a must bypass at non rush hours. There is no hope for Portland OR, Seattle WA, or Tacoma WA. San Francisco bay is best if bypass on the east at non rush hours. Central California valley, either Hwy 99 or I-5, at any time unless you can sneak thru in the middle of the night. Don't forget looping around NY and Boston.

I'm always happy to be thru Seattle!
Seems your either crawling thru in bumper to bumper traffic, or, on a Sunday afternoon, you can fly thru and rattle your fillings on the broken up interstate !!

Thanks to all...the list seems to include both large, sprawling cities and some smaller ones as well. Several comments about rush hour traffic...any thought on travel at night to reduce traffic?

The worst for us so far have been Atlanta and Phoenix.

This list can be endless. But the top 2 on my list are Dallas and Salt Lake; they both seem to go on forever.

To avoid cities one must commit oneself to traveling well far away from cities on alternate routes, all available by reviewing maps and/or manipulating Google maps to fins alternative routes.

When trying to get from point A to B rapidly interstates are best and timing is important.

Shreveport La. worst roads I have ever seen. Apparently they spend their money on river boat casinos and not highway improvements.

Los Angeles. We were stuck in HEAVY traffic due to road work. Took 6+ hours to drive less than 10 miles. ? lanes down to 1!

Washington DC. Drivers are ALL in a huge rush to get nowhere fast. They will cut you off left and right with no regards to safety, even their own.
