We have been on 14 from Cody to I90 on our motorcycle. Not wanting to do it in our 40ft DP. How is 14a. Am I better off to come in from Billing? Headed out that way in about 30 days.

US 14 and 14a are not easy for large, heavy vehicles. If coming from the east on i-90 I always recommend US 16 at the Buffalo, WY. It still goes over the Big Horn range, but it doesn't have the grades or corners that 14a and 14 have.

If coming from the W on I-90, I'd suggest the Laurel, MT exit and come S on US 210 to Rockvale, then S on US 310 to WY 114, then till it joins into US 14 on the route to Cody.

I have been over 14a east to west, it has some long steep grades up and down. I have a compression brake and in high mode, I was having to use the accelerator to main a very comfortable speed of 40 mph down hill.

Gorgeous drive, If you have a compression brake I highly recommend it.

agree with BFlin...we have been driving in our jeep all the many passes... We would not take 14 or 14 a

Having just come across 14A last month in our Horizon, I would also recommend a less challenging route. Very scenic, but very secluded - had to pause several times to let the engine cool down.

We've done 14 A in a truck camper (never again- I am still puckered) and just finished a east to west running our 40 ft moho gasser towing a car on a dolly on 16. 16 was beautiful and a much more relaxing run. Some pretty good uphill on the east side headed up 16 and some pretty hefty downhill approaching Ten Sleep on the west side. Either way 16 is and was doable and I would do it again. We really enjoyed the ride over 16 - we took it slow and used the pull outs. Scenery was breathtaking!

14/14a are great drives in the Toad, but not generally recommended in the Coach, will admit taking it once in our 28'GMC, long before this forum, did it while it was dark (2AM) so we missed the Beauty, but we did get lucky and see the Northern Lights as we started down the East Side. (Young and Crazy)

We just did this Route. Took 16 in our 43 footer w/tow. Enjoyed the scenic drive and missed the challenges of 14. Don't worry, you get one short stretch of easy switchbacks on 16 just to keep your attention!

I-90 through Buffalo on 16 to Cody works for big rigs... It's an aggressive climb out of Buffalo with only one switch back. IF you're in the Billings area, I-90 to 212 to 310 to 72 to 120 to Cody is a very nice drive... 14 NOT SO MUCH!!

Busskipper you and I must have went down 14 A the same year. I was driving a 28 ft travco rv pulling a jeep ,brakes over heated went down the mountain 10 miles before was able to stop.stayed there all night. In 1980 they never had road signs with grade %, 14A is above 10 .
