You can bypass Salt Lake City by turning south from I-80 onto US 40 going to Heber City ... from there go west on US 189 to Orem ( when you reach Orem take Hwy 52 over to I-15)
There is about 15 miles of two lane road west of Heber City but when you get to Provo Canyon the road is all 4 lane ...

We left Cody about two weeks ago. Traveled Hwy. 20 through Yellowstone Park south to I-15 to Salt Lake City. Good roads except for about ten miles of paving work on 20 north of I-15. Alot of construction on I-15 through Salt Lake and south. We took Hwy. 6 to 191 to Moab, Utah. for a week. Also good roads. Then 191 north to I-70 and west to I-15 south to Las Vegas. Some repaving on I-70 and I-15 , nothing serious.
Chek the wind reports. Wind can be dangerous on I-70 and northern I-15 all across northern Utah. Semi's and RV's get blown over up there frequently when that north wind is bad. I've seen it gust to over 70mph and it hits you directly from the side when you're on 70. Just check the weather before you catch that stretch. If no wind, then the only thing your have to fear is boredom.
