OpaRon,
There's lots to see as you take your time travelling:

Gurnsey, WY - Oregon/Mormon Trail sites, wagon ruts in the rocks, Newspaper Rock, Fort Laramie Nat'l Hist. Site

Scottsbluff, NE - Scotts Bluff Nat'l Monument, nearby Chimney Rock Nat'l Hist. Site

Kearney, NE - The
The Great Platte River Road Archway is a wonderful way to learn about the westward expansion of the USA. It's about a two hour stop to do the exhibits but you are welcome to camp overnight in the large parking lot (we did).

US 26/30 - Trains, Trains, and more trains. You can't believe how much coal comes out of Wyoming! Either in North Platte or Grand Island (memory lapse) is a railroad yard that is 5 miles long and 1 mile wide!
The route is fine for travelling if you are OK with little towns at regular intervals. If you have time before you go, ask AAA or the state tourism bureaus for visitor info on more sites to see.
Enjoy the ride
