Colorado in October

Is the first week or 2 in October too late in the season to cross Colorado on HWY 50?

Depends... there's no given. We've been around Silverton, CO at 10,000' in October with gorgeous fall weather and color. But we all know ... weather changes.

Have an alternate route if in a hurry. Watch the weather closely as you travel. Try to cross mountain passes by early afternoon when snow will have melted and before freezing again if it rains/lightly snows later afternoon/evening. Where are you coming from just prior to getting on 50 and where are you heading?

Be aware that there is major construction on 50 between Gunnison and Montrose around Big Blue Creek. The highway will be completely shut down for most of the daytime during the week with just brief periods of letting traffic through. It's supposed to be totally open on the weekends.

Colorado Chain Laws are Strict

You will want to check on the Colorado Chain Laws. Vehicles are required to carry chains during months when snow/ice are possible. Getting caught on the road when Chain Law is in effect with out chains is very expensive.

I refuse to travel in our Colorado mountain roads anytime the weather is predicting snow in the high country.

Also, check on road closures on I-70 at Glenwood Canyon. Mudslides have closed I-70 off and on through July & August.
